Vertical Tillage

Looks like at the start of a nightmare in south east
sask.

Anybody have experience or opinion on these vertical
tilling machines to dry stuff out and manage trash?

If this forecast materializes, a nightmare it will be.

Thing is, you need to be able to get out
there in the first place! compaction
issues are also a threat. These tools are
grossly over-rated IMO.

We had some success with Kelly harrow last
spring.

We have never used one,but a guy near town demoed one and the demo was going around being pulled by a quad track tractor.I know the land the year before basically sat idle because it was to wet to go on,and he ran that machine over it and they were able to get it seeded.With a normal tired tractor and not worked with that machine,that land would have sat idle last year also.

Just checked the forecast from USA that can't be
correct for Saskatchewan, downpours.

At the very least Start burning your wheat stubble
in our experience that is far and away the best
way to dry it out and maintain a good seedbed.

Used a Salford RTS last year and it worked great. Softened the land and dried it out. Left a nice seedbed. Quite pricey to buy tho. Believe a 41ft is around 80000. Need hp to pull it fast. Dirt shoots up like a rooster tail.

Has everyone forgot about blowing fields on dry years. Really burning wheat stubble? I think I would rather miss a year of seeding than risk it. 9 years out of 10 we are starving for moisture, hence the advent of zero tillage. Its a matter of time before we are facing that again.
