    Blaming chem companies

Why is it that farmers blame the makers of chemicals and expect compensation from a company when a weed becomes resistant to that chemical?

We as farmers are messing up our industry by spraying the same chemical 8 times a year, growing canola almost perennially, and expecting "science" and 'those evil seed companies' to keep solving the problems we create.

With limited sources of blackleg and club root resistance, are we really that stupid, or greedy, or just that lazy that we don't do the right thing with head firmly placed in the sand saying we'll get away with it.

Something has got to give. Group 9 resistant kochia in southern AB is just the begining.

But really, do you expect a company to compensate you because a weed becomes resistant to the chemical? Nuts.

Pretty sure only a farmer will show responsibility these days. A non farmer will blame someone else. A crazy age we live in when our own actions are not our resposibility.

I see neighbours that only grow Liberty canola every second year and now have a broadleaf problem. Cleavers and thistle are the worst but no they would try any other systems because its the big bad monsanto or liberty yeilds the best. The elevator says it is a good thing my canola comes in about the same time to blend off the weeds in the final sample...Part of the reason there is so much canola cereal canola is the wheat and malt barley price has been held down so low to satify the customers of the CWB. They are even still bragging that customers are coming back to them because of pricing arrangments...

            Hopper, unfortunately that just isn't
true. The fundamental question here is
should chem companies compensate for weed
            resistance issues of their chemical?

            I would say no.

Well I agree with you wd, not a big deal
though farmers that think that way won't
              be farming long term.

How long have we been hearing for years from
gov't and chemical companies that if you rotate
groups regularly then you will be just fine. And
then you have guys with chemfallow who spray
continually with .5 liter glyphosate over and over
and what a surprise we now have glyphosate
tolerant kochia. It makes me kind of mad actually
                Because this irresponsibility costs everyone
money in the long term. And what's the deal with
these guys who think canola-snow-canola is a
rotation?we are going to use prepass on our
durum ground Heat on our lentil ground and
                glyphosate on our LL canola.

When guys were spraying only 1/2 liter, round up and generics were running over 8 bucks a liter and I think everyone on this forum remembers the weather and the crop prices. Not a good time.

Most guys I know are going with a full litre and adding something depending what the crop is.

Bucket, for example, should the glyphosate
                      company subsidize the "and something"
                      because there is resistance?

Sorry. My point wasn't to say that spraying a half
liter of roundup is the problem. My point was that
the same thing over and over is the problem.
