StatsCan Report Shows Canadian Hog Herd Growth

According to Statistics Canada November 4th, 2011 report, Canada's hog inventories as of October 1, 2011, totaled 12 million head, up from 11.885 million the same time a year ago, and the 11.895 million seen at the previous quarter ended July 1, 2011. This was the first increase in October hog inventories on a year over year basis since October 2005 and the third consecutive quarter of growth. The estimated number of sows held for breeding was virtually unchanged. During the third quarter of 2011, a total of 5.3 million hogs were sent to slaughter, up 2.0% from the same period in 2010, Canadian hog slaughter peaked in the fourth quarter of
2004 at just over 6.0 million head. Hog exports amounted to 1.4 million head during the third quarter 2011, down 4.3% from the same quarter in 2010. Exports have declined for the past four years, and third quarter exports were 42.6% below the peak for the period hit in 2007.

        So what is your opinion?

I'm personally long and see hogs as one of the great
        trades.

We see hogs potentially going to $1.80-$2.00/kg by Summer 2012 depending on demand and the Canadian dollar.
