    Grain marketing clubs

    Hey all,
    Are any of you involved in a form of grain marketing club? If so and if you'd be willing to share your experience with Grainews, please email me at lyndsey(at)fbcpublishing(dot)com. Thanks!

    Hey Lyndsey;

    It is called Argi-ville Commodity Marketing!

    LOL... if this isn't a grain marketing club... there never ever was one!!!

    I don't know how it could be better formulated or executed... this is about as good as it gets!

      FBC don't you get enough info from your producers paying 10 grand per year so you can do their books? Maybe your business is not as good as it appears.

        I think you have FBC Publishing confused with FBC the accounting company. FBC Publishing publishes Grainews, Country Guide, Canadian Cattleman and the Manitoba Co-operator, to name a few titles. None of us are looking to be doing any accounting, that's for sure!

              Clubs=Basis level. The wider the basis the bigger the club a narrow basis is a smaller club. I think thats how it works. Marketing 101

                Marketing clubs come and go. Several have been very active in Alberta for a extended period of time. Some have moved to more production issues. Others have worked themselves into business arrangements. Depends on the community and the needs of individuals.

                Here is an article Lee Melvill did a few years ago.

                  Charlie...you know full well that the marketing clubs were just plain all out failures despite the AB Ag attempts to keep them going. How many clubs now exist?

                    I can name a half a dozen clubs that existed in the past year or so. Some have years of experience under there belts. One is currently involved in a very interesting business model.

                    Will note Lee's comment that marketing clubs are not a government program. They survive and provide value because of people in the community taking leadership and making things happen. As is also highlighted, most clubs have a life unless they grow into something else.

                    I might note that managing a farm must be one of the loneliest job on the planet. Difficult decisions everyday and no one really to seek advice from. One of the changes I have seen in my 30 year plus career is farm managers developing a support network. The support network is as individual to that manager as is their farm.

                      My favorite presentations are to marketing clubs. Lots of interaction. Don't let speakers get off easy. Use the information in business decisions.

                        I might note CWB FBR and market specialists do a lot of work with marketing clubs in explaining and helping farmers develop skill sets about the producer payment options. It is really around developing understanding of basis, forward price contract, minimum price contracts, identity preserved contracts, etc. The skills are transferable between commodities and marketing systems.

                          Looked like a pretty good group I only went to one meeting when they were starting another.
                          If it did'nt involve learning another accounting/benchmarking program and the time involved. I might have signed up
