    The CWB and new crop

With the announcement of Aug 1/2012 as the end of the single desk, what chance does the CWB have of actually securing any substantial contracts with wheat and barley growers who are willing to hold their new production over to Aug 1. I'm sure we will begin to see some bidding by the private grain trade shortly following the completion of harvest in anticipation of Freedom Day. Quite likely that those of us that are willing to wait to Aug wont have a need for a permit book this upcoming crop year or ever again. Its almost difficult to wrap your head around the fact that the terms "crop year and permit book" will simply fade away like a bad nightmare. Hallelujah!!!

In a nutshell the CWB will have to give us a competitive price for the held over grain you mention. Chances? I say slim to none.

All of the grain companies pricing will be fraudulent, just to make the CWB go away.

          cchurch,

AND I guess that non-board barley being worth more than the CWB got for board barley was the responsibility of the 'evil' grain co's to make the CWB go away? $13 plus canola prices? US export milling wheat prices of $14 plus per bu.?

          Corn at $8/bu?

WOW the whole world is conspiring against the CWB and the 'single desk' by paying up for grain growers produce!

What a novel idea!!! Paying a fair price for the grain bought... outside the single desk monopoly!

          Perhaps it would be inconvenient to remember cchurch;

that the CWB single desk MONOPOLY ONLY works... if the price paid to its grain growers (inside the designated area) is LESS than the international price of that grain. Otherwise there is NO Pecuniary Benefit enuring the (export license) applicant from the then prevailing price inside and outside Canada.

If there were NO pecuniary benefit... (enuring the export license applicant 'the grower') NO 'single desk' CWB Monopoly over grain growers.

Yet it is the express DUTY of the CWB under NAFTA/WTO to make sure the inside and outside Canada is the same.

How exactly does the CWB manage to suck and blow at the same time???

"Yet it is the express DUTY of the CWB under NAFTA/WTO to make sure the inside and outside Canada is the same."

It is truly a shame that the big millers and CWB grain co customers... use this provision... to make sure they never pay MORE than international milling wheat/bly/durum prices from CWB pools. ONLY less is allowed... if they can wangle it from the CWB sales dept.

WHAT a deal cchurch. Who did you say you worked for? Do you actually grow high quality milling/human consumption grains and sell them to the CWB pools?

TOM4CWB you raise an interesting point about the "pecuniary benefit" which is in the national licencing Part IV of the Act.
It does NOT say the difference inside and outside the designated area but rather inside and outside Canada - a very important point. And as you point out, the CWB must comply with NAFTA which means the price inside Canada must be the same as the USA (world price). And according to the CWB, they sell domestically in line with US prices which means the "pecuniary benefit" is always zero in compliance with NAFTA.

So what is the answer to your good question: "How exactly does the CWB manage to suck and blow at the same time???"

Actually its really simple. All export licences are issued for free. (no pecuniary charges and hence compliance with NAFTA)
But the way the CWB does it, they absolutely refuse to issue export licences to Prairie farmers. This means prairie farmers can only export grain they have purchased from the CWB. (the buy-back)

This amounts to confiscation of prairie farmers grain and it is not authorized by the CWB Act.

It is great that this monopoly is going to end, but that alone is not good enough for this abomination. The fraud of over 60 years should also be exposed and their years of lying and conning farmers for years should go down in absolute disgrace.
