    CN's Mongeau: Canada needs a more innovative, collaborative grain supply chain
    Canadian grain industry stakeholders need to develop a new business model that embraces innovation, increased productivity and greater collaboration in the supply chain, CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau told attendees yesterday during a speech at a Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce event in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

    “We need to articulate a clear vision of how we're going to foster economic growth and compete more effectively in global markets,” he said, according to a prepared statement. “To that end, we require business and government to embrace change and foster innovation.”

    Mongeau cited CN's scheduled grain plan, which was introduced last year, as an example of innovation that is driving significant efficiency gains.

    The plan calls for CN to deliver specified hopper cars to specified elevators on designated days each week to provide more predictable service. Last year, the railroad achieved a fulfillment rate of more than 85 percent for spotting covered hoppers on specified days.

    “Grain companies can now better schedule their staff at country elevators and waterfront export terminals,” said Mongeau. “It's all about selling the right grain at the right time to the right buyer and ultimately creating more wealth for Canadian farmers.”

    Achieving greater grain supply chain efficiencies means the system needs to evolve from one that's too often characterized by adversarial relationships to one based on closer collaboration and a clear end-to-end chain perspective, he said.

    “Embracing change and innovating together is the key to making the grain industry more competitive in global markets,” said Mongeau.

        There is something drastically wrong with the rail system in our area this year and everyone is passing the blame around. Elevators have no idea when cars will arrive.

        85% success? This winter it has been more like 15%

        Too bad our grain doesn't go to Mission Terminal I guess.

          Too bad you didn't live in Manitoba where they are pushing all the cars now to beat the spring flood. And then to mission terminal so measner can justify the ships he just bought on behalf of the cwb.

                  Ever thought;

                  This was a simple observation... that was a fact... and needs to be rectified???

                  Grain is moving. Trains are moving. loans are revolving... how about resolving to intentionally co-operate and make our system better for the customer that would pay a premium for better service!

                  Haven't the US railroads proven this?

                  Why are we so slow?
