    Is it not much wonder that we can't keep our young farmers farming? Banks demand you have economies of scale, but with the price of crops, livestock, inputs etc, how can they ever show a return if they have to compete with this.

    How come the government is allowing the Chinese to backdoor invade our farmland?

      I have to agree with Parsley and Malleefarmer on this, open mkt is open mkt. Those that pay to much will either fail or are smarter then those that sit on their hands (like me). Same as a grain market. Some of the "chinese buying" is really Canadian immigrants buying land. You really have to be watchful of what is said here, as there is a difference between the country of CHina investing heavily in land in Canada and someone of chinease desent investing in land in Canada. I have to think some of these people that have business decisions that are influenced from the influence of the situation in their homeland, may have more of an idea of where things are headed in the future. I was in China last fall and it is something else. If they need to charge $65/ac then they can give it a go, and someone is not stupid for renting it as it depends on their situation as well.

              Parsley why do Chinese like to come here?
              Reason number one is for their kids education. Buying a property is sure fast way to get the kids in school here.
              Not to mention can also bring over the relatives and everyone can collect all kinds of unemployment payments, work under the table, parents and grandparents can collect old age pensions and don't even have to live here.

                  At the end end of the day any investment wether it be land or not should have a return on investent, right? At current values this is a negative return on investment or will soon be if the renter forfits on payments - no? Or they just walk. And there is no willing renter to pick up the retarded $60/ac rent? This leads to land purchased for $200,000 , rented out for $30-40/ac if they are lucky, thats a pretty poor return IMO. And for all you nay sayers - it is happening as we speak. Don't believe me? - Wait and see! We generally grow 2/3 the crop as these Albertan's, alot more risk and way more freight - also way less crop Ins too boot. Have fun, the last big spendin Albertan just left with his tail between his legs, but what do I know? Oh yea, and an Irish Investor just got hung with 50 1/4's last week. Whatever! Some can't see the trees through the forest. There is a strong reason Sask Land has been valued where it was for the past 20 years - b/c thats all it's worth!!!!! Within 5 years all these donkey's will be crying for gov't assistance. Have at me.

                    Furrow, the irish investor thing, was this around Delisle, or Milden, SK? One friend of mine was working on a project with some Englishman who was going to farm half the country. Friend was going to do the agronomy/information collecting. They were soliciting venture capital money from different Eurpean folks and I do recall they had a meeting with someone from Ireland. Ultimately my friend was kind of...disregarded.. for the big picture. English farmer guy kind of wanted the lions share. Two or three years have gone by, it all fell down , my friend is renting some land from owners who got burned by the big project. I noticed the ambitious englishman is advertising custom seeding and spraying this year. I know I am just digging up mud, not positive stuff, but this will make a pretty good subject when we go fishing with the rest of buddies. Seven degrees of separation..small world...or whatever.
