Here's another three ag announcements this week. Do you like them or not?
You read about the Anmal Welfare Policy in another thread. There was also a hog policy for Manitoba last weeek, sort of an almost half-ways supply management system. How do these announcements affect you?
I won't be commenting.
#1 Canada's Economic Action Plan Investing in Manitoba Red Meat Industry
WINKLER, Manitoba, April 30, 2010 - The Government of Canada continues to support farmers and the meat packing and processing sector in Manitoba by helping open new markets for their products. Member of Parliament Candice Hoeppner (Portage-Lisgar) announced, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, a $310,000 investment under Canada's Economic Action Plan's Slaughter Improvement Program for Winkler Meats Ltd.
"Our government's investment in Winkler Meats will help this local company increase their processed meat capacity and pursue new product development," said MP Hoeppner. "This award is enabling Winkler Meats to add a new boiler and complete a plant expansion to house new smokehouses. As this company grows, so do opportunities for livestock producers in southern Manitoba, giving farmers viable domestic options for their product."
Established in 1964, Winkler Meats Ltd. is a federally-inspected abattoir and processing plant that employs over 40 people. Its brand products are sold across Western Canada in different chain and independent grocery stores, restaurants and at sporting venues.
This federal investment will be used to improve its operations through equipment upgrades and the expansion of its plant facilities. The installation of two new smokehouses and the upgrade of its production line equipment will allow Winkler Meats to continue to focus on opening up new markets for their high-quality products.
"Winkler Meats is pleased to be working together with the Federal Government. This investment will allow us to upgrade our plant equipment and expand our facility, ensuring that we remain competitive when processing and marketing our product," said *****on Gould, President of Winkler Meats Ltd. "We are looking forward to developing new products and expanding our business into new markets."
The Government of Canada's $50-million Slaughter Improvement Program, as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, makes federal loans available to support sound business plans aimed at reducing costs, increasing revenues and improving operations of red meat packing and processing operations in Canada. The 2010 Budget provided an additional $10 million to the program.
#2 GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN TRACEABILITY FOR CANADIAN HORTICULTURE PRODUCERS
LONDON, Ontario, May 1, 2010 - The Government of Canada is helping Canadian horticulture producers demonstrate their commitment to delivering safe, high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables to consumers at home and abroad. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Member of Parliament Joe Preston (Elgin-Middlesex-London) announced the investment of more than $750,000 to help the Canadian Horticulture Council develop a national on-farm food safety system that will strengthen the horticulture industry and help them show how safe their products are on the world stage.
"Horticulture producers can be proud of their long standing history of producing safe, high-quality produce for Canadians and consumers world-wide," said Minister Ritz. "This investment will further increase consumer confidence in the safety and quality of Canadian produce and will help growers boost their competitive edge in the marketplace."
The Canadian Horticulture Council will use this funding to complete their On-Farm Food Safety System for the horticulture sector. Currently, the CHC is making the food safety program available for implementation by horticulture producers across Canada.
"Growers here in Ontario and across Canada understand the importance of healthy food when it comes to maintaining a healthy business," said MP Preston. "That's why I'm proud to be part of a Government that works with farmers and makes smart investments so that Canada can continue to be a world leader in growing top quality agriculture."
"The Government of Canada assistance has made it possible for the Canadian Horticultural Council to develop a technically sound and effective on-farm food safety system for Canada's fruit and vegetable producers," said Andy Vermeulen, CHC President. "The CanadaGAP program is a clear example of the Canadian Government's commitment to helping farmers achieve their goals of safe production and market access."
Agriculture is a core economic driver in Canada which is why in addition to Canada's Economic Action plan, the Government of Canada is making these types of investments through Growing Forward. This federal investment is being delivered through the Canadian Integrated Food Safety Initiative (CIFSI) which helps organizations develop national, government-recognized on-farm and/or post-farm HACCP or HACCP-based food safety systems.
