Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 12 - Two rail car shipments of canola meal from Bunge's Canadian crushing plants tested positive for salmonella after inspection by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration at the border in May, Bunge Ltd said on Friday.

One shipment that tested positive in early May traces back to the Bunge plant in Hamilton, Ontario, said Bunge spokeswoman Deb Seidel. The second shipment tested positive in late May and came from Bunge's plant in Nipawin in the western province of Saskatchewan.

Parsley your 0;46 response which I have read before says APPEAR to contain.

        Your salmonella link reads,

The US Food and Drug Administration has slapped import alerts on canola meal plants operated by Bunge Canada in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, on Cargill Limited in Saskatchewan and on Viterra in Manitoba.

The alerts put the plants on the FDA Red List, which allows inspectors to detain shipments because they appear to contain salmonella, "a poisonous or deleterious substance" that could be harmful to health.

Which in my opinion does not show any positive salmonella detection. FDA put import alerts on canola meal which means that if they suspect salmonella they can reject the shipment even if there is no salmonella.

Parsley the USA has been plagued by salmonella all over the place, I even believe that suppliers are being blamed for outbreaks that restaurants are responsible for. Most poisonings come from unclean countertops.

            Take this for example,

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Liberté Natural Foods Ltd. are warning the public not to consume the Western brand cream cheese products described below because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

In this instance The CFIA and the manufacturer are warning the public not to consume the food.

Mostly or all of what the FDA does is stop suspected products. There is a big difference when CFIA and FDA work alone or along side the manufacturer.

Salmonella is found in most meal processing facilities as meal processing facilities were not set up to meet human food grade standards. This 'business' with the US stems from the human health salmonella scare from last year (everyone remember the peanuts?).

The US government is essentially covering their asses and addressing public concerns relating to human health even tho canola meal is not fed to humans but enters their country.

They test for salmonella at the border off rail cars and the cars sit until clearance is attained. PITA! But the issue needs to be addressed because salm in meal means lower meal prices for crushers, means they need to capture more money from oil to make up the diff or pay a farmer less.

                  Hope this helps.

Hopperbin, the FDA has detected Salm in shipments and that is why they get turned around.

Interesting tho that US plants are not being held to the same standard as Cdn plants. Can you say non tariff trade barrier?
