October 2003 -- The fastest growing cattlemen's group in the country, R-CALF, was founded by Leo McDonnell primarily on one issue: that if we weren't flooded by imports of both beef and cattle from our northern and southern neighbors that we could have a cattle business in this country that was both profitable and sustainable. It took a Canadian mad cow to prove R-CALF's thesis correct. Once the border was closed cattlemen on this side received the highest prices in history for their stock. In October of 2003 the price of fat cattle averaged 105.50 for the month!

December 23, 2003 -- A day that will not soon be forgotten. It was Christmas week and our present from Santa was our very own mad cow in this country. Albeit by way of Canada. Within three days of the Mabton Mad Cow being found in Washington state the United States lost 90 percent of its beef export market.

In introducing the Mabton Mad Cow at a Friday press conference on December 24 former Ag Secretary Veneman made no mention of the fact that the cow originally came from
Canada. When the futures market opened on the following Friday the futures market for all classes of cattle fell. Our market didn't crash like Canada's because ours is mostly a domestic market: we eat what we produce. In Canada they export over half of their production.

The point is that as an American cattleman producing some of the best beef in the world,I am sick of having an inferior product dumped in my country and passed off as American beef.

And now that the Packers have access to their Canadian captive supply and the ability to overglut and manipulate the market, we have steadily seen these $105.50 prices go down to $85 currently...And with USDA's trade perspectives they are on a run to go down to $70 again...

You can't import from every country in the world, without negatively affecting US prices, if you don't have an export market too....

And Canadian producers, who are riding the US producers shirttails, will ride them down right along, instead of listening to folks like Cam and rkaiser to actually try and develop your own industry...

I can see a lot of common sense in some of the things you have to say...but please don't think we are all idiots north of the 49th!

cowman- I buy the fact that feed is influencing feeder/calf prices-- but we are talking fats/ready to slaughters here...

There are some outside factors that influence them also- but the main one is more supply than demand- a glut of cattle/beef-- and a USDA that pushes importing from every country in the world, while still not doing anything to build demand or export to the world...They still refuse to allow BSE testing (demanded by Japan and the Asians), implement M-COOL, refuse to close feed ban loopholes, refuse to ban steroids/hormones which is the anvil Europe holds over our head- mainly because all are opposed by the Packers....

Canada should be testing their OTM's not only for surveillance, but to sell/export the product- but as long as the Packers own USDA and USDA is the puppet handler of CFIA, it won't happen...Instead they want to open the border to OTM's when there is already a run of cheap Aussie meat hitting the market and being imported because of drought...If the border opens to OTM's both sides can look at $20 culls again....

I been telling you MR- More and more people are seeing the true picture-which became very apparent in this months election and will again in 08 if things don't change...Folks are tired of being sold out to foreign countries and big multinational corporations and their global trading- especially buying products we don't need just to aid the third world countries of the world.....Big Support America First movement...
