Hong kong stops beef shipments from Swift

Hong Kong Suspends Beef Imports From Swift

    12 March, 2006

    1 hour, 33 minutes ago

HONG KONG - Hong Kong has suspended imports from a U.S. beef processing company after discovering its products contained bones prohibited under regulations aimed at protecting against mad cow disease, the government said.

Hong Kong partially lifted a two-year ban U.S. beef imports in December, imposed after mad cow disease was detected in a cow in Washington state. Only boneless beef from cattle less than 30 months old — and without the animal‘s brain, spinal cord or other parts considered high risk for mad cow disease — are allowed into the territory.

"The decision was made following discovery of beef imports with bones from that plant during inspections," the statement said. "We will contact the relevant authorities for more information concerning the beef imports in question."

The spokeswoman for the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong, Susan N. Stevenson, said it was an isolated case, with a bone shard found in Swift‘s products, and there was no risk of mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

"This is not a food safety issue," she said. "There is not a risk of BSE from the bone shard."

Japan had imposed several conditions for resuming imports: beef must come from cattle younger than 21 months, and body parts that can carry mad cow must be removed.

I can't get Kansas prices off their website, where are you getting them? Tried KCBOT electronic but shows n/a. Might pull the trigger on some FPC if it looks like a no brainer.

Reading between the lines...sounds like somebody has it in for the USA? You don't run a high speed boning line without an occasional "bone shard" getting in the product...especially when you are using low paid help that really doesn't give a rip!
Reminds me of when the USDA had this goofy gungho inspector at Shelby Montana who rejected every load from Canada? Didn't take the packers long to get an inside man who let them know when he was on shift! No deliveries when he was working! The USDA figured it out fairly fast and skidded him.

Just thinking about what I just wrote....Willowcreek? Did you ever work for a short time as a USDA inspector at Shelby Montana?

cowman "Just thinking about what I just wrote....Willowcreek? Did you ever work for a short time as a USDA inspector at Shelby Montana?"

Nope- Most the inspectors I've seen were the opposite--mostly just there collecting their paychecks...Couple were quart a day fellas...You don't get transferred to an isolated Montana border port for being too sharp.....

Well Willowcreek, I didn't think you did...just trying to be a smart ass!
I thought Shelby was a big deal not some micky mouse operation? Doesn't just about everything go there to get on the Burlington railway? If you notice that real good road north of Shelby up to the border you might wonder how come you have such a fine road? Guess who paid for it? Yes your old friends in Alberta...the same ones you beat the hell out of at every opportunity!
Now we didn't pay for it out of the goodness of our heart...just couldn't run our big cattle liners/oil tankers on those poor old Montana roads! LOL
However if you have ever travelled that road you will notice something fairly amazing? There is just as much, if not more traffic heading north as south...hmmm... maybe you yanks aren't doing so bad with us after all?

Oh, one other thing Willowcreek? I usually like to go down to Montana a couple of times a year. I actually really like the whole place as it is very diverse and the people are very friendly. Always hit "Big Red" in Great Falls?
The security thing at the border is getting to be a real pain! They want your drivers license, birth certificate, you have to answer like twenty questions and you have to wait for them to check you out on a computer...and it isn't any better when you cross back into Canada! A big change from a few years ago when it was "Where are you folks from, where are you going and why? Okay have a nice trip."
Now its like you are a criminal or Osamas brother or something! Like right...two middle aged blond blue eyed people in a new chevy...definitely terrorists, right? I realize you guys are a little gun shy down there but we need to get some common sense here...well maybe the ID card thing will fix it up?
Funny story: My buddy was travelling downt to San Antonio to the Beef convention. Now this guy looks like Baxter Black or something...cowboy hat, buckle the whole nine yards? Anyway this security guard with a turban told him he'd have to wave a wand over him to check for...whatever? My buddy said from the looks of you maybe I should be doing the waving! Well his big mouth(he'd had a few!) got him a strip search! He actually thought it was funny as hell and got lots of laughs when he tells it!

I have had that thought just about everytime I go through security at Canadian airport. Last time I went trhough the fellow made me take my shoes off so they could scan the damn things, I almost made the remark that "I could put a little device between my toes but you sir look like you could carry an arsenal under your hat(turban)" Luckily my wife was with me and she yanked my lead rope just as I was opening my mouth, she can read my scowl very well.

                  Have a good day all

I was going through security last year in Calgary when some fellow threw a fit because they wouldn't let him take is favorite pen knife on the plane, the RCMP had him up against the wall so fast it made his head spin !!!

His wife looked like she could have run the knife through the silly twit if she would have had the chance !!!
When they were finally allowed through security his wife was still giving him whatfor when they were lined up to get onto the plane !!!!!

I was going to yell ' you go girl' but the RCMP were still within earshot so I just cheered her on in silence !!!

Yep Cowman the border is getting tougher...And on some things Canada is even tougher than the US...If a US citizen ever had a DUI they are banned from crossing north- I know it has stopped several of the fishing groups from going north when one of them is refused at the line...

Surprisingly I have seen a few Saskatchewan vehicles down here a few times this winter....Used to see a lot 10 years ago and then none- must be the exchange that kept them out....I don't make the Great Falls stores too often anymore- usually go to Billings instead...Over here I think most of the Canucks go toward Williston with its K-marts and Walmarts and all...

Willowcreek: Hopefully both governments can come up with this ID card they are talking about and that will make things a lot easier? It sure must be frustrating for a truck driver going either way? Maybe with our new government we will get some decent security on our own borders so the US won't be so gun shy of what is coming in from Canada? The last bunch we had in here had the welcome mat out for just about every piece of trash in the world!

Also Willowcreek: It might just surprize you that we actually have Walmart up here and even a few Macdonalds! Hey we even have a big Cargill plant and an IBP plant!
In fact you might think you were in the good old USA if you ever ventured north? You might even be surprized that we drive chevys, Ford, and Dodge pickups trucks just like you old American boys! You might even marvel how our darned cows look just like yours?
Actually you might be surprized that we aren't all left leaning homo loving socialists! In fact you might be amazed that in Alberta we are probably more American than you Americans!...and at least in Alberta...that we have one hell of a vibrant economy!

On this Hong Kong thing: Now they say retailers in Hong Kong are getting cozy with Canadian packers and looking for product from here instead of the USA?
Now how can this be? Hasn't R-CALF's propaganda campaign that Canadian beef is evil and will surely kill you, worked all that well? Do those Hong Kong boys think they are a bunch of liars and clowns or something?
I do believe the CFIA took the high road and they came out of this thing looking pretty good? I also believe the CCA took that high road, even though it was pretty tough when you had R-CALF doing their best to destroy every cattle rancher in Canada!
The chickens are coming home to roost? Most people can recognize BS when they see it and hey very few like a big bully?
Thanks to R-CALF, in the end we just might gain some markets? R-CALF....working for the American cattleman? I don't think so. When they started implying American beef was evil, just like Canadas, I think they really crossed the line? Send them another calf to auction off!
                              Just my opinion.
