Smithfield continues acquisition binge

Omaha, Neb.-based ConAgra Foods has agreed to sell several of its meat brands to Smithfield Foods of Smithfield, Va., for $475 million in cash and $100 million in Smithfield stock.
The sale includes the Butterball, Eckrich, Armour, LunchMakers, Margherita and Longmont brands, plus associated plants, equipment and inventory. The brands had 2005 sales of about $1.8 billion.
