    Black Angus

Driving past a local Angus breeders pasture the other day, I was really impressed by the good big cows and stout calves. Now this family has been raising Angus forever and does a good job.
I can remember twenty years ago they had these dumpy little cows but they sure aren't now!
A fairly close neighbor used a couple of bulls from this breeder a few years ago and said the calves were big and growthy but calved easy. They rang the bell at the fall sales.
This Angus breeder doesn't baby these cows. They are out swath grazing most of the winter and calving in the brush in April/May. They are a good looking herd.

Just went up to Mayerthorpe the other day through Cold Lake-just looking along the road it looks like people are calving a bit later-lots of younger looking calves. Does anybody know the deal with that feedlot on the edge of Barrhead-nothing like a few hundred cows with baby calves slopping around in the mud to make a guys stomach turn-wasn't a very pretty sight.
