Feb 23, 2023 | 08:44 1 Awfully quiet on here of late.
Looking at retail diesel prices this morning around Alberta. Unbelievable range. The low appears to be Edmonton at $1.399 a litre. Then Calgary is $1.639. Red deer $1.679. Three Hills $1.699. And the eye popper Grande Prairie at $1.969. What is everybody else seeing in your area?

Fertilizer prices. Urea prices stateside down 25% from $1 per pound of N to $.75 now. Similar in Canada as shown in the latest thread on Agriville on fertilizer. People like myself who historically buy in the fall got kicked in the ass on this!

Glyphosate prices. Seeing $9 a litre to just under on generic glyphosate. Hearing rumblings it could even be lower by summer. Any thoughts?

Wheat. Certainly sideways to down over the last month. A week ago you could still get $12 for #1 13.5 for March. At present that ship has sailed. Any thoughts on where wheat is heading?

Canola. Popped up a bit in the last week. $19.25 was available at a few elevators in central Alberta yesterday. Talking to seed retailers is sounds like seed sales have been very good this year. Went into fall extremely dry. Not sure what to say about future canola market trends.?

Barley. Surprised at how the price of feed barley has held up. $7.25 was available for fall. Price around here of late is low $8 at the bin.

Anyway, cold Thursday morning here, just hoping to stir up some conversation! Reply With Quote

  • Feb 23, 2023 | 09:22 2 Nitrogen: It's a challenge to get the dropping price of N to translate into a lower NH3 bid. Wheat has been a dog, but at least Canada is exporting at a decent pace. I can't see carrying over wheat as a viable option. I got a recent offer of $8.50 for feed barley that germs 90%+ from G3, malt for China. Crushers occasionally hitting $19.50 for May delivery. Heading to the beach for a reset tomorrow, yippee. Reply With Quote

Feb 23, 2023 | 10:14 4 I am in the $1.96 retail diesel area, coop delivered dyed is in the $1.30 + GST range.
Grain turned to shit, I am not selling anything.
Equipment prices are insane, but I don’t think it will last, prices are starting to come down. Some high priced specialty equipment I have been watching since last year is finally being discounted.
Changed my spring seeding plans last week.
In Vancouver this week, lots of grain being loaded onto boat.

Interesting question on the unpriced grain. In discussions with grain buyers a couple of weeks ago most felt farmers were on average 40% sold on wheat and canola. I don’t know how much that has changed. I have talked to neighbours holding out for $12.50 on wheat. That may be changing don’t know. Personally around 75-80% sold depending on the grain. My gut says we will see $8/L for 540 shortly. Reply With Quote

In our area the grain buyers I've talked to think more than 60% of canola and wheat has been sold..all the grain bags have been cleaned up around here. I sold my carry over from last year and holding this past years crop.. All of it in bins so no rush.. Reply With Quote

Only phosphate left to get ,and of course no movement there.
And dealers want double/triple $for parts they do not even care to stock and are 10 days away.?

Feb 23, 2023 | 18:06 15 Is there a fuel supplier out there in Central Alberta that does any prebuy diesel for the year or is everyone spot only? Reply With Quote
Feb 23, 2023 | 18:57 16 I don’t know of anyone that offers fuel prebuy as it is so volatile.
On the current $8.99/L glyphosate delivered to farm offer - there must still be room to move if they can ship it to you on that price. They won’t ship a single tote but if they can assemble a truckload to your area then it is possible. No reason your local retailer (who must buy truckloads for inventory) can’t be selling for less. Ruzzia had been supplying a significant portion of Eastern Canada diesel, JP for aviation, and premium gasoline.

Wondering how that is being handled as assume it probably involved some non taxable income to make it attractive to all involved.

Gosh last year yields were okay and harvest early at expense of subsoil moisture. No we’re possibly going back to tough harvests. Reply With Quote
Feb 28, 2023 | 00:18 23 Cereals are all sold and delivered. Last of the fertilizer got delivered. Always nice having it here when the nearest blender is 50 km away with a lineup at go time. Canola is sitting in the bin and not sure what to do with it?

Nice to get some new pasture opened up. Thinking of trenching in water line too since there’s no frost in the ground and only a crummy dugout on this quarter. Got one price back on pipe and it was about the same as stuff we bought four years ago which is almost as surprising that it’s actually available.

Doing undercarriage work on the challenger and finding that the drive wheels are on back order without an ETA is quite disappointing. Going to have to do some more digging to find another option possibly. Kinda frustrating.

The oldest son has a school project where they have to build a bridge out of cardboard and popsicle sticks. He found a cardboard tube out of a net wrap roll and cut two pieces for beams. Going to wrap it in tape and glue popsicle sticks to make a deck on it. It should easily hold the 6 kg test weight that’s placed between a 30 cm gap. He schemed it all on his own.

Washing machine cratered last week after only 3 years just like the last few. Talked to a friend who owns a laundromat and bought a commercial machine today that will hopefully stand up better. Was only going to buy a rebuilt one but the Mrs liked the shiny new one besides it so she got an early birthday present. She’s happy, I’m happy, hopefully it survives for 8-10 years with the crud it will eat out here.

    Beautiful weather has returned.

Cat doesn’t carry them anymore and Agco after four days of pestering can’t give an ETA. Very disappointed in them especially since they’re still making new units with the same part numbers. Apparently Deere used the same drive wheels on some units so my brother is looking to see if we can find something that way possibly. Reply With Quote

The guy we went to see had some rebuilt Huebsch front loads which is the same as a speed queen. Ended up getting an LG as the Mrs wanted a few more cycle options than they offered. I’ll be curious to see how it shakes out. Learned more about laundry in an hour visit with him than either of us knew before 😉 Reply With Quote

Mar 3, 2023 | 12:13 29 Brazilian farmers have only sold 30% of their soybeans (150m tonnes) this year, the lowest amount since 2006.

Apparently they are waiting for higher prices.

If decent US crop…in 2023… could be big pressure in global markets… Argentina could be under 30m tonnes, down from 50m tonnes last year…

Apparently Canadian canola crushers are importing canola from Australia…. Wheat is also over priced in Canadian domestic markets….

I see Cargill offering $19.50/bu this morning for Canola….

Looks like store beef prices will be up big time this spring…

US is still not holding back heifers…beef herd still shrinking…

Brazil refuses to report BSE information in a timely manner…. Over a month after positive is discovered… US legislation to ban Brazilian beef being pushed forward…
