    Greta and Chuck2 anti-capitalists!

In the National Post:”Meet the new Greta Thunberg:I’m going to war on ‘racist capitalism’.

Michael Shellenberger tweeted “this is proof that Greta hates capitalism for reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with climate change”.

I have always felt the environmental movement was more interested in socialism than the environment, It is not about science, it is about political change! Reading Chuck2’s posts I have come to the same conclusion!

Anything to charge away at other than getting a job. Been the same since the 60s. They stop when life hits. By then a little more damage done tho.

Never have so few done so much to impoverish and destroy their countries. A two-man wrecking ball at the helm.

But don't worry, we can all switch to electric vehicles and electric everything else, after all it's so much cheaper as Chuck keeps reassuring us. Paying twice as much to recharge your electric car then it would have cost to drive the ICE vehicle sounds way better than capitalism.

And, I should add, that still does not include any type of road tax. All of the taxes will be added on above and beyond this cost eventually.
Plugging in and charging on Petro-Canada’s Electric Highway just got a lot more expensive for EV owners. Instead of billing owners at differing rates in each province, the oil giant has now instituted a flat […]

From the comments section following the article:
So charging at Petro-Canada will now cost 2x more than using gas? Any error in my calculation?

        $19 to charge to add 49 km range: 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, 61km electric range, 38 minutes to charge to 80%. 38 x $0.50 = $19; 80% x 61 = 49km

        $8.82 cost of gas for 49 km: 9 liters per 100km gas fuel economy, 49 x 9 / 100 = 4.41 liters used for 49 km, $2 per liter

One of capitalism's biggest flaw is their is no economic incentive to protect the environment, the planet and conserve resources.

What economic value does the current economic system put on conservation, clean water, clean air and all the benefits that the ecosystem provides? Nothing! No economic value!

How does continued growth and increasing consumption work when the resources we depend on are being depleted and degraded at an alarming rate by 7 billion people? We are only 200 years or so into the industrial revolution. What will be left in another 200 or 500, or 5000 years?

Fossil energy systems have created great wealth and a high standard of living for a relatively small portion of the planets population.

It is impossible for everyone in the world to have the same resource consumption and standard of living as what north americans and europeans have based on fossil energy sources. To do so we would need the resources of several more planets.

At the continued current growth rate of greenhouse gas emissions we are on track to uncontrollable climate change that will devastate much of the worlds oceans and ecosystems that we depend on for life on the planet.

How will uncontrolled capitalism protect the planet and ensure that human life on the planet is sustainable?

The reality Chuck2 is that 18% of the world’s population is in China(over 1.4 billion). A centrally controlled Communist dictatorship. How is that working out for the environment and human rights? How does making fossil fuels more expensive help the poor?

While what you say is absolutely true, and I agree with your concerns about sustainability, have you checked out the environmental track record of the communist and socialist countries throughout history?
For all of its flaws, capitalism has a much better environmental record.
Which doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.

I have this feeling that as a future goal, China has cleaner air and water for their people. After food. They know their just exiting their own Industrial Revolution. First things first.
Europe will be whatever mess it always has been. Today Russia driven.
Africa and India two very different cultures with their own agendas.
Giving all our wealth to the aforementioned will not change their culture or patterns.
Any tech advancements enjoyed are supplied from cultures that somehow cultivate the desire and reward for same.
You are over simplifying a complex world to satisfy your world view and justify your position.
If you feel strongly enough, go on mission for a while. Lofty ideals are all you should need.

Can’t disagree with this. Think most of us are on the same page and the biggest threat is depletion of resources. Whether climate change is or isn’t as seriously affected by carbon emissions as what we’re led to believe is another topic in my opinion but simply running out of essential resources at the levels of consumption is more scary in my mind. To blame developed nations solely for this is not correct. India and Sub Saharan Africa stand to develop exponentially in the coming decades and demand for resources will only increase. Then there is China. Sure they can all go to cop27 and blame the developed world for everything while they stand to increase their pollution and use of resources.

I never said the solution was communism did I?

The only solution is governments protecting the environment and managing growth.

We already do it to a large degree for example when we don't let companies dump toxic pollution into water systems.

Most people agree with protecting fresh water and the environment for future generations.

So the question is how serious the problems are how far we need to go with environmental protection.

Government policy moves at a snail’s pace.

My most recent experience federally relates to last springs budget. They changed how much a corporation could depreciate a newly acquired piece of equipment. I believe up to 100% in the first year. Hence my accountant applied this to my tax return. A month ago I received a bill from the CRA to pay more income tax based on the previous formula. I asked my accountant if I should pay it. He said no, that they were working at getting the CRA up to speed. And you think government is the only solution?! Pardon me while I laugh😂!

So does anyone really believe less government regulation would be better for the environment? LOL

Kenney and Moe were/are good examples of governments that are too friendly with industry. And they are not the only governments that aren't doing a good job.
