Viterra Announces Intent to Build World Class Canola Crush Facility in Regina

Viterra is pleased to announce its intent to build a world class canola crushing facility in Regina, Saskatchewan. The company is in the feasibility stage to finalize the plant’s capabilities and design, with an initial targeted annual crush capacity of 2.5 million metric tonnes, which would make it the world’s largest integrated canola crush facility.

Good news for sure. I would not be surprised to see the size scaled back though.

Maybe 1.25 instead of 2.5 now.

In the past we had local crushers to keep the offers - from the exporters for canola - honest or reasonable ( sort of some times). Competition for canola seeds off shore vs domestic crush.

Now those exporters all will have big crush plants domestically. Sounds good initially, but you can bet they will be VERY motivated to supply cheap feed stock to “fuel” those facilities ahead of exports of canola seed.

The benefits of selling or hauling for crush will likely be diminished, so farmers will likely be squeezed more by the monopolistic- big exporter market place. Premiums maybe short term, longterm questionable. We will need strong alternative cropping options.

                    This is fantastic infrastructure, but

The Crush will help so that we don't have the China Scare like before and no federal help when it was Ottawa that hurt our Canola industry.

This is good news but yes all are owned by elevator companies that ship also. Premium maybe not.

Yorkton RP Price has been lower than RP at wadena for awhile now..
Plus 34 cents for us to get it to yorkton..
Bunge kicking ass in this area now.

                          Louis Dreyfus

Not big in the primary elevator sector

Could they be building in Regina because the end-game is actually bio diesel, maybe reading the trudeau tea leaves? Forcing Ag to reduce carbon?

                              The questions are...

                              1. How many litres of biodiesel from a bushel of canola?
                              2. How does the price of biodiesel correlate to canola price?
                              3. Do you pay carbon tax on biodiesel?

                              All valid questions?

We have world class refineries in Saskatchewan for heavy oil . We supply our own needs within Saskatchewan. And yet we are taxed like crazy on everything.

Now we are getting world class canola oil refineries that should be as environmentally friendly as solar and wind but farmers are excluded from any carbon offsets????
