Electric Car won’t get us far

Good article in the financial post: financialpost.com/opinion/ bjorn-lomberg-the-electric-car-won’t-get-us-very-far. What stuck in my head was that a hybrid Toyota Prius reduces C02 emissions as much as any electric car without the downside of shorter range and need of charging stations!

It's a really good article. Probably won't see any of the regular pundits comment in this thread, as there isn't much they can defend.

Electric cars are just incremental steps to reducing carbon emissions. They are not a magic bullet.

Good hybrid technology and high fuel effciency vehicles are just another step in the right direction. But the market demand for trucks and large SUVs work against fuel efficiency gains.

Then maybe the rocket scientists that allowed the railways to create the trucking industry should be hauled in and questioned...

If this country instead of allowing consolidation of grain elevators and railway network would have looked at a modernization based on changing of farming practices instead of dollars to shareholders....they would all be richer today and have a better environment...

The people that made decisions 40 years ago are the people that should be held account for the mess today...

Milk flour groceries all come from somewhere else now and are trucked to where it is supposedly local...after being handled at many other places before getting to the local if there is a grocery store left...

And by the time it gets "local" its just as cheap to jump in the car and buy at the consolidated store in the larger centres...

Government policy has been for decades to consolidate to larger everything....those that can't see the issue with it ...are blind...

Good article Hamloc, always enlightening to read what Bjorn has to say. An environmentalist who can do math is a refreshing and extremely unique entity.
But, In the ongoing effort to MAGA, I won't get into this debate.

I will however suggest that Chuck should consider getting back into politics. What a brilliant response, a whole mouthful, with all the key words and talking points, without saying anything, and without even remotely addressing the concerns in the article or by the other posters. He could probably write speaches for Trudeau himself. Almost like he just has a fixed set of responses ready to cut and paste, and hope they are somehow relevant to the article which he can't be bothered to read, since it may interfere with his permanent state of cognitive dissonance.

So if renewables don't work how come Bjorn lists wind and solar in the list of ways to clean up electricity production? So you believe Lomborgs opinion that electric cars wont help, but don't agree with renewables as part of the solution?

If we had half the rail lines that were tore out still in use with appropriate facilities on them you could reduce the large trucks by 75 percent....

What happened to consumers paying R&D instead of taxpayers?

If you remember back to the days of hundred plus dollars oil, That was consumers paying the R and D costs on the Shale revolution. We have been reaping the rewards of that investment ever since , And will be for a long time to come.
It still happens, it still works, And the result is a spectacular success as opposed to this other Taxpayer sponsored boondoggle
