Chicago | Reuters — U.S. President Donald Trump is assuring a bumper year for farmers as the Nov. 3 election approaches, with record government subsidies projected to make up more than a third of farm income in 2020.

The aid programs could be key to Trump’s chances of success in swing states such as Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa and Minnesota. Such states are hotly contested because their population can swing either to Republicans or Democrats and play a decisive role in presidential elections. Farmers favoured the Republican president by a wide margin in the 2016 election.

With the latest $14 billion farm aid package announced in Wisconsin on Sept. 17, federal payments to farmers are expected to reach a record $51.2 billion this year (all figures US$). The government’s share of farmers’ net cash income will also rise to 39.7 per cent, the biggest in 20 years.

So what? They support farmers in the USA.

Canada we have NDP LIB who do nothing.

Cons are no better as the free market has to work but it does most of the time except when the USA and other parts of the world protect there own.

Canada needs protection for farmers before it's over.

Oh, chuck your farm dream of everyone should be 1000 acres and sing and dance and love. Is just a communist dream.

No chuck I want fair and if the USA is helping and every other country that we compete against is playing games canada has to protect farmers.

Real simple farms will end if this shit doesn’t change.

God it’s simple even a guy like you should figure it out

When the Canadian govt messed up all of our markets. All they could do was to increase the CCGA loan. Why can’t we keep up with the US. I guess your paid to say Trump Bad

Trump can do this because the USA generates a lot more real wealth per capita than the canuckistanian one. Whether he should do this or not is debatable. Here in third world canuckistan, it really is true that our government can't afford to support its farmers more than it does. Too much of our economy is government and financial transactions (think the FIRE sector) dependent on government manufacturing inflation. Other major obstacles to growing our economy besides government include poor weather and poor geography. We have solidly frozen tundra already in the middle of October.
