Gypsy Moth Infestation

Jul 6, 2020 | 17:35 1 Big mess in our part of Ontario this summer. Last fall, there were thousands of large egg masses on the tree trunks in our hardwoods.

Now they are hatched and the trees are crawling with the caterpillars, millions of them. When one walks through the woods, there is a light shower of caterpillar crap falling all the time. They look like miniature peppercorns.

An adult caterpillar can eat up to 1 square meter of leaves over their 6 week lifespan. Defoliation is getting noticable already and they're not done growing.

Looking at getting our hardwoods sprayed if it isn't too far along in the development of the crawlers. They get up to 2 1/2" long before they pupate.

dalek, are you seeing them in your part of the province? Reply With Quote

Hugely. They’re everywhere. Townies are complaining bitterly about all the “pollen” falling on to their picnic tables, bbqs etc. The one saving grace is the entertainment value of being able to tell them it isn’t pollen Reply With Quote

It's incredible that those "little" things can create that much shize.
