    ulcers in baby calves

Does anyone know what causes ulcers in newborn calves? Thanks for any information.

Once heredity problems have been ruled out ulcers in baby calves could be the same as in humans. In humans, ulcers are caused by Helical bacteria. The stomach notices the intruder and will raise acid levels to sometimes 100 times normal in attempt to kill the bacteria, thus burning out the stomach. In humans, the treatment required is very high levels of antibiotics and bismuth. My experience is that by the time you notice the calf is in trouble, it is far too late for this type of treatment.

I agree that it's very hard to spot a calf with an ulcer. They are usually just 'poor doer's' or even look just fine. I have heard a theory that vaccinating the cow with clostridial vaccines can help. Has any one else heard this? (I do know that it can help prevent certain scours).

My vet informed me that some (but not all) ulcers are caused by the Clostridial bacteria. Vaccinating pregnant cows with a Clostridial (blackleg) vaccine will promote an increased immune response in the calf and reduce these ulcers.
