CSGA Seed Grower Meeting today.... decision day...

CSGA is meeting in Ottawa today deciding if 'Seed Synergy' and 'Value Creation' initiatives... will go ahead.

Will the spin doctors and 'professional' seed industry win?

    Is there a chance:
    - with seed breeding going private, that the majority of future breeding will be done in other countries with less taxation and road blocks😊 ?

    - smaller ish seed growers in Canada disappear, as the demographic and succession of the Family Farms disappear?

    - with Canada being a high cost base, overly regulated and taxed jurisdiction, all the seed distribution will go through big retailers, coop, Viterra etc ? Tied to delivery contracts ( extortion bundles) ?

Profitability might improve in the short term? Be careful what you wish for as there are always the “ unintended consequences”

I don’t see the system as broken. If the breeders aren’t profitable go else where, or fix it with value creations not new varieties that get deregisted in a few years

    Good luck with the meetings.

Just reviewed the UPOV 91 stuff.
So Tom you can save your
          Energy .
It's over, you already gave away
          The saved seed option.
91 turned a UPOV 78 a right to save seed into
A privlage ,regulation. a future Gerry Ritz , can eliminate
It with the stroke of a pen.
Not that is really needed, since it also
Gave the right to deregister a variety at any
          Time.
Another little tidbit , rules changed on pulses
That any unregistered variety can only
          Qualify for the lowest grade.
And to top it up are the contracts you sign
When you purchase the seed .

The farmer saved seed Privlage means
          Next to nothing.
And remember, even if we have any
          Public breeding left.
Once it is gone. Under the new and old
NAFTA, you can never bring it back without
Having to pay compensation to the seed co.s
          For lost potential revenue.

All you can do is shake your head
          And swear a lot.

If it goes ahead let's launch a class action lawsuit against the seed industry for extortion and racketeering. We'd have a case.

There is a fellow in Regina that would gladly take it on.
