Can someone help me understand something? I visited a farm yesterday with a very experienced ag consultant. He was explaining to the farmer that he needs to switch his feeding schedule so that his corn silage or haylage was fed after his dry hay. This was so the cow could create a rumen mat? i am assuming longer fiber feeds helps create this mat? But i do not fully understand what a rumen mat does, or why finer grains, or finer feed stuffs should be fed afterwards?
