    Federal Levy

Was looking at a cattle payment stub from some cattle we sold in 2007. It has a deduction that just says federal levy. Is this to support the CCA?

    See:

The Federal Levy deducted from your cattle cheque would go to Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency.

The Levy is collected by the various cooperating provincial organizations, forwarded to the Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency which then distributes the proceeds according to the wishes of the contributing provincial organization. Most of the levies go to the Beef Information Center (BIC), Canada Beef Export Federation (CBEF) and Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC).

The federal levy refers to the $1 per head that goes towards the National Check-off. This money funds the Beef Cattle Research Council, the Beef Information Centre and the Canada Beef Export Federation to support national research, marketing and promotion of Canadian cattle and beef in Canada and around the world. The CCA is a not-for-profit, non-government organization that receives funding from its provincial member associations - they are assessed based on their marketings.

It's the only Manitoba checkoff that's not refundable. We never ask for MCPA money back, but have been asking for the MCEC to be refunded. Until the NDP can prove they're not blowing it out the window we will continue to do so.

How about you? There have been stories on the news lately that 70% of the MCEC money has not been requested back, yet everyone I know asks for theirs. Do I only know that particular 30%? Or is there something funny about that press release.
