NDP learn fast in Alberta on how to deal with AG problems!

Instead, the province is pointing farmers to insurance.
“Our Agriculture Financial Services Corporation is also monitoring the conditions on an ongoing basis,” Alberta Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier said in a statement Tuesday.
“They have a number of existing programs that are designed to assist producers in circumstances such as this.”
But insurance won’t come fast enough, Shaigec said, as the AFSC is short on inspectors to visit farms quickly.
Crop production in Parkland is down by 70 per cent, he said. The situation is being exacerbated in some parts by an infestation of grasshoppers, and will soon have “a devastating impact on the bottom line.”

Basically the politician guide to dealing with issues related to ag!

    1. Tell the press its early rain always comes in Canada.
    2.Say were monitoring the situation.
    3. Never let them see you sweat.
    4. Tell the public you understand the situation and their are programs in place to deal with it.
    5. Set up a task force to look at. This process should take till spring of following year or mid summer, you hope the situation straitens it self out.
    6. Talk to the feds.
    7. Give lip service.
    8. Study is finding it is dry, Who knew.
    9. Feds wont cooperate blame them, its a election year.
    10. Do as little as possible for as long as possible all things either floods or droughts eventually go away.

Be interesting to see how Alberta does in the next 4 years, they are now importing washed up socialists from Sask.
Their MLA's are union lobbyists, social workers, students, anti-energy activists, etc.

Good time to live in Saskatchewan!

My thinking is she is planning this problem to get at harper. Look the big bad feds aren't doing any thing, Mulclair will say he is very interested in helping out. Not really saying he will or wont but interested in the situation. Old style politics.

Um, isn't the government right? Isn't this why farmers have heavily government subsidized crop insurance? Especially AFSC crop insurance compared to SK is pretty flush. Lucky farmers to live there in AB

Not to downplay drought effects on Alberta farmers but used to hear some of them sympathize with Sask farmers over less generous Sask crop insurance.

              But saskfarmer answer this
Is the current government in Saskatchewan or the federal gov doing anything or going to do anything? Easy to criticize the ndp and say look theey re doing nothing but wtf are these ones doing?

We ll see what transpires maybe they will do something. I know some of the liberal candidates are saying the programs are broke.

Don't worry, farmers in Alberta will now see a huge increase in property taxes, unions for farm labour, income tax increases, more enviro regulations etc etc etc...... I'm ok with less gov interference.

Until I see a gov't take a bold stand and talk about bringing capital punishment for cold hard repeat criminals I don't think any party will do anything different.

Getting rid of the senate and stop the padding of expense allowances becomes number 2

Fixing the first nations corruption in some reserves is number 3

Actually a sales tax is probably the fairest form of taxation going, and should be looked at. Wouldn't like it, but willing to carry my share of the burden.... as long as it has positive results.

I guess the question is how much of the risk of farming should the govt be responsible for and how responsible producers should be for accurately assessing the risk of farming and dealing with that risk.

                            SF3,

                            We in Alberta historically
are blessed with reasonable risk management programs for our Ag sector. I don't see this changing with the new NDP Gov.

I do not see how any gov would/should/or easily could react any different.

I say a job well done... hold the course... my city cousins don't need to cross subsidize our farms and create trade problems with international markets. Smell the coffee.

                            Cheers!
