The future looks good for seed companies

The future looks good for seed companies and increased wheat variety development, unless a nightmare scenario develops, says a Canadian seed development leader.

“What I’m scared about is Mr. (Stephen) Harper may wake up tomorrow morning and say, ‘I think it’s time we went to the polls,’ ” said Canterra Seeds president David Hansen.

“That’s not going to be a good day for most of us in the plant breeding world if this was to fall by the wayside.”
He was referring to Bill C-18, an omnibus bill that will give seed companies more rights and powers to be paid for varieties they have developed, which is now before Parliament.

The legislation will die if prime minister Harper calls an election, and the next government will have to re-start the process of approval, if it even chooses to do so.

Hansen said the bill will likely become law sometime in March, “touch wood.”

He told the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association annual convention in Winnipeg Jan. 8 that wheat breeding in particular suffers because of seed companies’ inability to be paid for their research and development.

He said only 18 percent of the acres on which cereal grains are grown in Western Canada are paying any sort of fees, so little money is going back to companies. As a result, he added, they aren’t investing much into wheat variety development.

“The return on investment is certainly not there,” said Hansen.

Private companies invest $65 million per year developing canola varieties for Canada but only about $8 million into wheat. The once king of crops receives half the investment of canola when that is combined with $25 million from farm checkoffs and governments.

Hansen said the variety registration process, which he called costly and unpredictable, is another disincentive for seed companies to invest in Canada.

“Canada’s not doing very well in this area,” he said.

Note to all who think the new seed rules will help farmers follow the money. We are going to get royally screwed so bad its not even funny.
It will be Canola all over again. No big yield than we got in 2012. But one thing we will get is a huge bill each year for shit varieties.
    Always follow the money.
    They win we loose.

Notice how he mentions that Canola gets 65 million into research and wheat only 8. He wants that extra from You MR farmer. Once its gone its gone like Canola.
Now we have groups like the Canola council who represent all but one group runs the show.
Wake up its not the farmers.
Its like Monsanto when we were the Ginny pigs that grew it segregated it sold it separate had it inspected then got a flight to St Louis. Were thanked for our effort got a little gift and sent home. Told at that time we opened up a whole new world for USA farmers to buy Corn Soy etc.
Reality they didn't give a rats ass about us just one more way to make a buck and we lost out big time.
And again here we go with Wheat and some will blindly sit buy and watch the shit show unfold and not have a clue what's happening.
Smoke and Mirrors all the way.
F%^k Farmers are a Dumb group.

Sounds like Mr. Hansen isn't very confidant that Harper would win next election.
The other thing is, if only 18% are paying where is our check off and money we are pouring into WGRF going?

Wheat is already a low margin crop, where do they think the extra money is going to come from, the promise of extra bushels grown? The last thing we need is more bushels of wheat, but that would be backward thinking now wouldn't it!!! So every other Industry that tries to protect their margin by not oversupplying the market must also backward thinking managers? Think about it

Seed companies might view this fellow as a loose cannon.
Might as well have come right out and said that the seed companies want new regs so that they can take more profits from the sale of wheat seed.
If his 18% figure is correct?? it means that 82% of wheat used for seed each year is either public domain or from the previous years crop.

March of 2014 Cargill had a good CPS wheat price for march 2015. I wanted to forward price some. They told me the tonnes were reserved for farmers who bought SY 985 seed from cargill for 2014 crop year. The kicker was they wanted 15 dollars a bushel treated with cruiser max and you had to buy 640 acres of seed at 2.5 bushels an acre. This is for a crop which you could forward price at 5.35 a bushel. This will be the new norm when the large seed companies get into wheat after the implementation of UPOV 91. It will be just like canola today!!

But yet again some think this is good for farmers.
It is being put in place buy the suppliers so they can get more and more from us for nothing in Return.
Yet some groups continue to think this is good and some farmers cant see that this will destroy another crop in Canada.
Industry wins again Farmers loose out but hey why would industry let us ever win one.

But when prices go to shit then some finally see the shit show that has developed.

Okay enough running down "Producers". What do you propose "we" do when legislation is put in place to allow this to happen? Will we lose full control of wheat? I dread the thought of this and it will take afew years to evolve but I see it coming. There is one group you can thank for this. And don't give me that shit about "privilege". Privilege is not a RIGHT and can be revoked at any time. You guys ****ing bitched and moaned about the shackles of the CWB and "YOUR" PROPERTY RIGHTS, **** now all I hear is crickets from those same Foghorns...
