    Barley and Winter Triticale

Does anyone have experience growing these together? Does it reduce the barley yield? What is the feed quality of the barley straw/triticale mixture?

I grew Fall Triticale with Oats in '98. We had drought conditions so it would be hard to say what affect the Triticale had on the yield of the Oats. I cut must of the Oats for greenfeed and combined the rest. The Triticale stays fairly close to the ground so you would have to swath quite low to get much in your straw. I chose to swath high and use the Triticale for fall grazing. The triticale that was on the greenfeed part of the field was considerably fuller when the cows went on it because it got more sunlight than the patch that was combined. I would expect similar results with Barley as opposed to Oats. I hope this helps a bit.

Gordon Hutton, Forage Specialist with Alberta Agriculture at gordon.hutton@agric.gov.ab.ca did some trials looking at this area I believe, might be worth while dropping him a line.
