    Parasite control

After using Valbazen (spelling might be wrong) How soon should the sheep be moved out of their area as to not become reinfested? Does Valbazen control lung worms? If not what does?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Festus, Valbazen is one of the anthelmintic treatments that are destructive to worms, also known as internal parasites. It is one that gets "inert" worms or those that go into the lining of the gut and can remain dormant throughout the winter and then they make their appearance when it warms up again and these inert parasites are the ones that can cause the most damage to the gut. Safeguard (trade name) is another that gets these types of parasites.

To my knowledge, both of these are "off label" for sheep and goats, which means that there hasn't been any testing of these products on sheep and goats - small ruminants - like there has been on horses and cows for example.

The vet can tell you for sure whether Valbazen works on lung worms.

Strictly speaking the parasites are killed within a very short time frame and any that are shed out in the fecal material are "dead", so it should be okay to move them as needed. Again, maybe ask the vet to be sure, but that is my understanding of how these things work.

    Good luck!
