    Amaranth

Anyone ever heard of this plant? Has it been grown as a field crop? Any info on it being grown in Canada?

Amaranth is related to pigweed but is a different species. It has not become a weed in fields where they were grown. The grain amaranths have large colorful seed heads and can yield over 200 to 1000 lbs. of grain per acre. Plants are about 5 to 7 ft. tall. It is best grown in areas with high sunlight and warm temperatures. It has a long growing season. The most common use for the grain is as a flour for the health food market.
