    Hay going south

I was in the local coffe shop the other day when a hay trucker came in. I got talking to him and asked him where the hay was going. It came from Valleyview in northern Alta. and was going to Bozeman Mont. I asked him what it was worth? $140 a bale! He said if you think it is dry here you should see it down there! They've been feeding their cows since late July. Now I'm no rocket scientist but even I can see this just doesn't make sense! This hay was about 1200 lb. bales and not even all that good from the looks of it. Almost 12 cents a pound...fed at 30 lbs./day for 304 days(Aug 1/may31) equals $1064/cow!
My question is how can they do this? Or why would they even try?
