    black currants

I live in Ontario and am currently looking into commercial currant production. I am seeking advise on two fronts. One, how do you thoroughly research a potential markets for a new crop. Two, are there any currant growers willing to share information. Thanks in advance

I would suggest that you contact Mike Columbus in Simcoe, ON (1-800-316-6664). Mike is the alternate crops specialist, and has an excellent ability to assist you in looking at a new enterprise. In Alberta we are testing several new lines of black currants at our research station. You are correct that there is sometimes some reluctance to share information. I would suggest that you look at our AAFRD website, and contact our fruit specialist (Lloyd Hausher, lloyd.hausher@agric.gov.ab.ca)

There is a group that is trying to establish a North American Black Currant industry and to expand markets for black currants in North America. There was one meeting in Vancouver last year and another in NE US. The intent is to work with processors to develop new products in North America by importing fruit if necessary, and to eventually fill this market with NA produced Currrants. We are working on the economics of black currant production now and hopefully this will be done within a couple months and hopefully posted on a website somewhere. We want to encourage production, but at the moment there is no guarrantee of market. We have had a number of new producers plant on spec. I am waiting to look at the economics to see if I can make a profit if I have to sell at a world market price of anywhere between $.40 to $1.75 per lb. If you want more information about the group and what they are doing you can contact Dick McGinnis at mcginnis@island.net
