    Stats Can: Record SK Lentil Production in 2009. How were your yields this year?

    REGINA — Lentil production hit record levels in Saskatchewan in 2009, while durum wheat, canola, barley and oats production decreased, according to Statistics Canada.

    A record 2.3 million acres of harvested area helped lentil production increase 35 per cent to a record 1.4 million tonnes from one million tonnes in 2008.

    By contrast, farmers harvested 9.7 per cent fewer acres of durum wheat than in 2008.

    Harvested acres totaled 4.6 million acres, with an average yield of 33 bushels per acre. Total production decreased 8.1 per cent to 4.1 million tonnes from 4.4 million tonnes .

    A decrease of 9.6 per cent in yield resulted in lower production of canola, which was reported to be five million tonnes, or 605,600 tonnes less than 2008.

    Harvested area decreased slightly to 7.6 million acres, from 7.7 million acres in 2008, while the reported yield was 29 bushels per acre.

    For a second consecutive year, harvested area of barley decreased, dropping to 3.2 million acres from 3.6 million acres in 2008.

    Production decreased 15.6 per cent to 3.9 million tonnes. Yield also decreased to 55.1 bushels per acre from 58.6 bushels per acre in 2008 .

    Oat production was reported to be down 33 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes. Harvested area decreased 570,000 acres to 1.3 million acres from 1.9 million acres in 2008, while average yields decreased 4.4 per cent or 3.5 bushels per acre to 73.9 bushels per acre.

    Spring wheat production decreased slightly to 7.3 million tonnes from 7.4 million tonnes in 2008, despite of a 6.2 per cent increase in harvested acres.

    Farmers harvested eight million acres of spring wheat in 2009 with an average yield of 33.3 bushels per acre.

    Mustard seed production increased 46 per cent to reach 180,300 tonnes. Harvested area went up 13 per cent to 400,000 acres with an average yield of 994 pounds per acre. This is a 29-per-cent increase in yield from 2008.

    The survey of 2,648 Saskatchewan farmers was conducted from Sept. 1 to 9.
