    Canada's Catalonia?

Just enjoyed reading an articl by Jack Mintz in the Financial Post titled: Canada's Catalonia? Careful Ottawa, western alienation is beginning to rear its head again. Maybe those of you more tech savvy than me can set up the link. In the article he makes many good points, one I enjoyed was "It was not helpful that the less-than-affable Montreal mayor, Denis Coderre, declared it a "victory for Canada" when TransCanada withdrew its licence application for Energy East, a pipeline project that actually would have provided market-diversification benefits to the national economy. It would be no different than if the mayor of, say, Winnipeg- home of the Boeing plant - declared it a Canadian victory after the U.S. Commerce department slapped on two import duties on Quebec's heavily subsidized Bombardier planes. Coderre's insensitive comment reminds many Western Canadian's of their own past grievances." The article continues on and makes many good points. I always enjoy his outlook. Enjoy your day.

Sask premier Brad Wall went to some length to say he is not supporting western separation.
Said investing in our resources development is in interests of whole country.
Hope successor to Wall will support same policy.

There is little support for western independence. It is a pipe dream at this point. There is a whole lot of grumbling. But if there is a strong case for resource development, pipelines, reforming equalization, then make it and back it up with strong arguments and not so much political rhetoric and conspiracy theories.

But in the case of Energy East being cancelled that has more to do with declining growth projections in the oil sands and increased gas shipments being viable on the existing pipeline. The regulatory change and politics has had an impact but economics and surplus capacity is a bigger issue.

We are going to need the oil and gas sector for a long while yet, but we also have to plan for the future with more low carbon energy sources. Other wise we will be left behind in terms technology and investment.

Denying the science behind climate change and arguing that global warming is not a serious threat to the planet will make it difficult to make your case and weakens your arguments in other areas.

You can't produce a commodity without a way to sell it. Doesn't work. You need pipes trains or trucks to get oil to an export position. Without that you wont have production.

What we have is a massive brain drain in western Canada again. Haliburton Phoenix Schlumberger are headhunting here for positions in other countries... And their offers are very good. What happens when you loose the estimate and brightest?

Separation is a pipe dream. Bc won't join a western state and without them we would be landlocked.

It's also pretty hard to attribute any credible argument to those who preach that we have to support a lie in order to move forward.

Thank goodness there are still those who put principles first, regardless of the cost.

Because, if truth is sacrificed for fleeting popularity, what do you have left -the Uncle Harvey Weinsteins, the Morneaus and the Trudeaus, the Clintons...

Because they wouldn't want to share their grass.

I'm thinking Yukon and NWT would want to be in the resource rich western republic.

Possibly even Northern Ontario would want in to not be controlled by Toronto Liberals.

And what makes you think that southern Ontario likes being controlled by the Toronto Liberals?

If Toronto (essentially area codes 416/905) would be forced to be a province of its own - an idea with wide rural support - the whole country would be a different, healthier place.

Such a provincial designation would also solve a lot of other issues and allow those who embrace "diversity" to take in all the "diversity" they want, lol!
