    Highway fixes

    When they go it fix the highways they can only fill in the grooves created by semi traffic...

    Why not just put a new surface on....before the sub grade goes to shit....

    Any one else noticed this practice in the province...

    You should see how snc does highway construction. Very very slow. They don’t put down oil before they pave and they pave right over the weeds. They started in April doing some turning lanes and a couple passing lanes just east of Kindersley. They are taking forever to get anything done.

      That same style of half ass highway fixing has been going on down here in the SW corner for decades!! Nice waste of our tax money as usual.

        Yes same thing here Bucket. Never ending patching and filling the ruts. Highways are bone jarring!!!

          So while they can't fix highways properly for all residents ....how does the province have money for a money pit project like irrigation to benefit 250 farmers?

              in Alberta they make a new hardtop and the first thing they do is put groves in it so you can be on your phone and drive. Absolute stupidity. after a few years that highway is toast. prime example hwy 12 east of Stettler.

                Hwy 9, youngstown to rochdale... they "recycled" the old asphalt, and laid it back down. Didnt last a year. Its horrid. Surface layer just keeps pushing out right to the gravel base. It's a friggin slalom course!

                  If only the NDP had held onto power in Sask instead of that dang ol' Sask Party - we'd have all the paved roads turned back to gravel by now like Romanow started doing. Perhaps if Meili becomes premier they'll gravel the Regina bypass. And close the Children's Hospital in Toontown, you know, like they did the Plains.

                    The amount of heavy truck freight has grown exponentially on thin membrane highways not designed for it.

                    Are we expecting too much from our highways? One year we had fert delivered from the States in about 24 tonne loads. I suspect interstates are classified heavier haul roads.

                    Some roads are so poor ,Sask has 8 tonne max limits on stretches of them.....our tandem grain truck empty is 10.

                    Primary, secondary, 9 month primary, restricted.

                    Do US States have heavier weight allowances than 24 tonne?

                      Department of highways are responsible for approaches up to fence line as well are they not?! Maybe I can sell the rights to the approach to ducks unlimited!

                        Yes.

                        Interstates are federally regulated roadways. It all depends on "bridge weights". The idea is tou try to spread the weight over as many axles, spaced as far apart as possible. A standard super B with 244" wheelbase is maxed at 105,500lb or 106,000lb depending on how "forgiving" the DOT is holding the tape measure. That worked out to about 30.5mT for us, and lightweight A-trains were pushing 33 to 34mT on one less axle.

                        Slap a pusher axle on and your good for another 10,000lb

                        If you stay off the interstate and run only "intrastate" highways, then the state sets the rules and each one is unique, and the weight limits can get pretty high. Guys running long wheel-base trucks with pushers that were pulling tri-axles with a drop axle can gross upwards of 112,000lb in the winter time in some of the northern states.

                        It's a truckers nightmare, and a DOTs dream when it comes to interpreting all the rules!

                        We used to run some real DOT magnets. Special order Doepker super Bs with unique pin depths, sliding fifth wheels on the bridge, and spread tandems on the pup. Legal for 111,000lb or 112,500lb on trucks that ran 12R tires on the front end. Try dragging that across a scale without getting pulled in when every DOT thinks a super B maxes at 106,000lb...

                          They did the new level seal on the highway running N and S by the farm. It really smartened up the highway. Just the two lanes and centre. We had a good base.

                          I'm all for this its a very nice road now.

                          A few years ago they did the same north of Melville it lasted for a bit lots of heavy traffic.

                          It's better than the old oil gravel drive on the patch that never worked.

                            Why do we have a highway department to fix roads ....while I don't agree with groove fixing when the highway needs to be resurfaced properly ...the local highway department does an absolute shit job of basically painting the highway with their fix...

                              The highways in Alberta are waaaayyy better than a lot of the ones we got here in Sask. I was up to Lacombe last fall and didn't drive on any bad highways in that area. Alberta always has had better highways than Sask.
