I know back when I was younger there would be a large group that would cut firewood and clean campgrounds at provincial parks . But they stopped that because it was demeaning to the poor little criminals.......
now they get satellite TV, exercise rooms, fun group activities..... it’s the easy button society now even for young offenders.

If you grow up in poverty and poor social conditions with few opportunities for getting ahead you have a good chance of remaining in that situation for the rest of your life. There are exceptions of course. But children have no control over who their parents are, where they live and go to school. Many first nation communities don't measure up to the the living and community standards we are accustomed to and don't have clean water, good housing, and good schools and enough well paying jobs. We created the situation they find themselves in when the Indian Act was passed in 1876. Much has changed since then but here is an example of how the deck was stacked against first nations:

Restriction on access to the courts

A 1927 amendment (Section 141) forbid any first nation or band from retaining a lawyer for the purpose of making a claim against Canada, and further forbid them from raising money to retain a lawyer, on punishment of imprisonment.[18][19]

Same with the residential school excuse for all actions , that has nothing to do with me or my family .... if anyone should be responsible it is the church .... not today’s tax payers

The Vatican has lots of money to pay for their past wrongs . It in no way ever fall onto today’s tax payers that had zero to do with any of those issues.
That’s my take , like it or don’t , but it is certainly not my financial responsibility for any of their issues , ever .

Easy subject to talk about endlessly, but impossible to do anything about.
              The power of culture etc.
              No fix will ever happen.
We've made them sovereign. The money will have to run out for all of us first.
Deed them their land and be done.

If only Newfoundlanders had done that, they would never have had to migrate to survive lol..

Harper apologized in 2008 for the residential school policy that was supported by governments up until the 1960s.

" Mr. Speaker, I stand before you today to offer an apology to former students of Indian residential schools. The treatment of children in Indian residential schools is a sad chapter in our history. . . . Today, we recognize that this policy of assimilation was wrong, has caused great harm, and has no place in our country. . . .

The government now recognizes that the consequences of the Indian residential schools policy were profoundly negative and that this policy has had a lasting and damaging impact on aboriginal culture, heritage and language."

There are still many problems with first nations policy and living conditions in this country and yes we are all responsible for letting third world conditions exist on first nations!

The first thing to do is recognize our attitudes are part of the problem and accept responsibility for the welfare of all Canadians with out placing all the blame on those who did not design the system or policy they live under.

People like Chuck are the problem for our current situation.
Chuck has lower standards for a group of people unfortunately and figures a group of people based on race aren’t capable of following the laws of the country.

We need to treat all humans equal and make everyone accountable for their own actions.

Already said that whoever commits a crime that they need to be held accountable. So you can put that idea to rest.

I am glad you are in favour of equity for all, because by many measures first nations are not treated equally or have the same standard of living in this country as the majority of other Canadians. And that is a big part of the reason why social problems and crime are a problem for many first nations communities. Poverty, racism, isolation and a lack of opportunity define the lives of many first nations.

But in the mind of some, it is just easier to blame them for everything and take no responsibility or acknowledge the system and conditions they live under.

Colin Craig, Prairie director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, describes Chief Spence’s pay as “quite high.”

“Especially when you consider she serves a pretty small community, yet she makes more than the mayors of Thunder Bay and North Bay, Ontario. Ultimately, when cases of high salaries for aboriginal politicians arise, that means there is less money to help the grassroots,” Mr. Craig said.

The First Nation, where about 1,800 people live on reserve, is no stranger to scrutiny. A housing crisis in 2011 triggered a state of emergency and Prime Minister Stephen Harper accused the band of mismanaging its finances.

A subsequent audit looking at how $100-million in federal dollars had been spent highlighted questionable spending practices, some of which occurred under the helm of Chief Spence.
