Sadly the American position was entirely rational and buffoonery was entirely on the part of canuckistan. Marxist blarney was out to deliberately scuttle the deal because he is really after putting export taxes on Alberta oil and Saskatchewan potash. He know that he won't harm the US, however he can and will do significant harm to Alberta and Saskatchewan and that was the plan all along. This deal could have resulting in beginning the dismantling of supply management, which has to be done at some point anyways. Make US booze available. Individual consumer can decide whether or not they want to buy it. I can't see where the US position was in error.
