Can argue who was a bigger pos leading our country but how the present American administration is going about trade talks is akin to shotgun diplomacy. They show up, demand what they want, and leave empty handed because they are trying a mob style shakedown rather than a trade negotiation and our negotiators aren’t giving in. Dairy is supposed to be such a big issue but fact of the matter they have tariff free access room which they never fill anyways. Far as I’m concerned they want more access to our banking which is far more dollars involved than some tit pullers. American banks can come in and compete with our handful of schedule 1 banks providing they abide by our regulations which they can’t. Look past dairy and every other apparent irritant the Americans say they have with Canada but it’s about banking access and softening the regulations more so. The present administration wants to make an example of Canada to coerce the rest of the world into their new trade regime of tariffs and quid pro quo. At the heart of the matter is the USA is in a debt bomb which they are trying to make the rest of the world pay for before it becomes untenable to service.
Trump part 2 is probably the best thing to happen to Canada. He’s caused us to think about looking after ourselves and not being reliant on the USA. Too bad we allowed as much integration with the Americans as we did previously but at least now we maybe can grow up and move on. Since nafta we have no doubt benefited but that is done and even after Trump craps his last diaper not much will change. It’s going to be tough but have to forge on our own path.
