Why are pickups such a suburban status symbol when few families need that much car?

I farm and drive my truck rarely and use my suv for running around because it gets high 40 mpg versus my guzzling 1/2 ton
Always amazed how many trucks are sitting IDLING in front of the Co-op or post office by the same people who Bitch about gas prices

Be careful the "smokin" truck drivers will look down on and think you are an eco warrior drivin a compact like that!
Deer, rock, cows, wife? Yikes. You might want to put some big rubber tire bumpers on the next one.
Thanks for the advice.
True story, I was up to over 20 confirmed kills with my first truck(and countless replaced bumpers, grills, radiators, lights), when I put a big bush bumper on it, never hit another animal again.

From your cut and paste above:
According to the IIHS, there’s only a 20 per cent difference in the fatality rates of cars and trucks. Cars still do come in at a higher 60 per cent, but trucks aren’t that far behind, taking in 40 per cent of fatalities.
Cars are 50% higher, not 20% as stated.
Do you even read the propaganda before you paste it?
Never said I drive a VW diesel.
I have a beat up compact car that I use for any trip that doesn't require a truck.
Or at least I used to. Eldest son slid off the road and hit a massive rock a few days ago. It did more damage than the deer I hit at highway speed a couple of years ago. Along with all the dents from cows and wife.
Perhaps all the unrepaired body damage is why it keeps being reported as an abandoned stolen vehicle when I leave it in a field. 3 times already I've had the rcmp call to tell me my car has been found abandoned. Right where I left it.

You left us hanging....I can't wait for the full rebuttal from the guy who once said he drives a vw diesel car! But is sure bigger vehicles are always safer?
