Why are pickups such a suburban status symbol when few families need that much car?

So much for the argument that EVs are only for rich people. Luxury pickup trucks for suburbanites and other people who don't need them are too.

No wonder every second add is for luxury pickups and the big 3 make a lot more profit upselling the dream.

Have you ever noticed how many of them are lined up and idling in the Tim Hortons drive through just so they can pickup a coffee and a box of tim bits?

Tons of carbon end up in our atmosphere, while kilograms of fat end up on their lazy asses.

And I drive a farm pickup when I need to.

So the hypocrite who flew to Ottawa for an NFU conference about climate during a climate crisis, is worried about his neighbors idling their pickups at the drive through.

But chuck you drive a pickup.
this might be your worst post yet. You drive a pickup!
Bcuz youre a farmer you deserve less criticism than the next guy based upon where they live and their " vehicle usage"?
also heres a reason why alot of families drive a pickup.

Price out a new ford f150 and check out the availability...
then go price out a new chrysler pacifica ( non 4wd) or a honda minivan ( non 4wd).
Go price out a toyota sienna ( 4wd minivan) and see how long it takes you to get it. Heck, find one on kijiji with 4wd and good luck at getting it!

Trucks are simple. Easy. Reliable and safe. Thats why they sell.
Im not putting my family of 5 with 3 little kids and 2 dogs in anything less than a half ton chassis ( we drive a yukon xl when need be, just like chuck chuck drives his half ton when " need be")

My madre ( mom) was in a head on collision a couple years ago.. other driver was in a minivan. He did not survive. My mom was in a 4 yr old chev silverado and the only reason she is alive is because of the truck. I went and got some stuff out of it and it was shocking to see what was left of that thing.... ( the rear taillight lenses were shattered from impact... theyre shatterproof plastic)
You sit higher up and are safer than alot of vehicles on the road today.

You sit higher up and are safer than alot of vehicles on the road today.

Vehicle safety involves more than just size.

If size is important how will your truck survive against a semi? So we should all drive semis then?

There have been several studies that have said that oversized trucks and SUVs are causing more serious crashes because they are too high.

https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/the-hidden-dangers-of-big-trucks/

Trucks also have a much higher centre of gravity which increases roll over risk.

Single vehicle roll overs are one of the most common rural accidents. And guess what. A lot of them involve people who are ejected from the vehicle because they don't wear a seat belt.

Apparently in the "big safe truck" they think they don't need a seat belt!

When your kid turns 16 are you going to get them a truck and let them drive on gravel roads. Because a lot of them end up in the ditch because they drive too fast and are inexperienced.

When I occasionally drive on icy roads especially around Winnipeg, the number of overturned trucks and SUVs is remarkable compared to lower centre of gravity cars.

So size matters in some types of accidents but not all. So its wrong to say trucks are safer.

"Trucks Aren’t Always the Safest Option

Vehicles with more mass should fare better in the event of a collision, and when it comes to trucks and pickups, pros with auto body technician careers know that this is often true. With that in mind, you might expect that the number of fatal crashes that involve pickups is drastically lower than that of cars. However, you would be wrong. According to the IIHS, there’s only a 20 per cent difference in the fatality rates of cars and trucks. Cars still do come in at a higher 60 per cent, but trucks aren’t that far behind, taking in 40 per cent of fatalities.

According to research by the University of Buffalo, every additional 1,000 pounds of weight on a vehicle reduces the risk of injury in a crash by 19 per cent. With that being said, although pickup trucks are safer in some instances like head-on collisions, there are other factors that can make them dangerous in certain types of accidents.

For example, many pickup trucks ride much higher off the ground than the average car. While this offers drivers an added feeling of safety, it can actually make trucks more dangerous, as they are prone to rollovers when hit from the side. In addition, drivers in larger vehicles may have a false sense of security. Despite the fact that pickup trucks tend to be more powerful, they don’t necessarily offer superior handling on the rough road conditions that Canada is notorious for."
