The lower flows are because they are shrinking! Get it? Probably not. And that's why you want to discuss when the glaciers started melting? LOL

But what caused them to melt so fast over a century ago, was CO2 to blame as well? At only 300 PPM?

Do you think they started melting at the end of the ice age, and its been all down hill from there? Or have they grown and shrunk much more recently than that?

Look again at the NASA chart of the last 800,000 years that includes the glacial and interglacial periods and CO2 levels. What do you see?

Nothing above 300 ppm until the 20th century and now we are above 420!

You probably don't have to worry much. The last one ended about 10,000 years ago and it takes at least a couple of thousand years to get one going again, unless there is an asteroid or a super volcano in which case you will have much bigger problems to worry about!

And ice ages don't usually make top 1000 issues list that voters are concerned about, except if you happen to be a fervent climate change denier like A5 then it's in the top 3! LOL

You are old enough to remember the Mount Pinatubo eruption.

In 1991,when:

Mount Pinatubo erupted in the country’s north, blowing a cloud into the sky that would cast its shadow over the entire planet.

Considered the strongest terrestrial volcanic eruption in the past 100 years, the nearly 5,000 foot volcano had been dormant for over five centuries. Then, over the course of four days, Pinatubo spewed 10 billion tons of gas-charged magma and aerosols into the air.

The volcano erupted for four days.

The resulting haze cooled Earth by 0.9 F (0.5 C), according to the US Geological Survey. Though one degree is imperceptible to human skin, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (pdf, p. 5) explains that a single-digit increase in the earth’s temperature can have dramatic effects: at 200-400% more land burned by wildfire; a 15% decrease in sea ice, and up to a 15% decrease in agricultural crop yield.

0.5 degrees cooler resulted in 15% decrease in crop yields worldwide.

What about when Tambora erupted, you might not remember that one, but the results in 1816, known as the year without a summer, saw crop yield losses up to 75%, even 90% on the other side of the globe. All caused by average global temperatures to decrease by 0.4–0.7 degrees C.

Meanwhile, throughout the period of beneficial global warming and increased CO2( plant food), world crop yields continue to increase year after year.

Chuck, How do you explain the 3600 years old human artifacts found in melting glaciers ?
How is it possible that glaciers were smaller 3600 years ago with CO2 levels barely half of what they are today? Yet today, the melting is caused by co2?
