Travelled in the past week NE to Bonnyville and NW to Westlock. Crops in this region are a disaster. Wheat is doing the best out of a sorry lot. Barley is as yellow as a canary. Can put the canola production in the same super B from the entire region. It is horrible. Peas have given up which is good because china is screwing around in the pea market so might as well sell them to crop insurance. Saw field of Faba bean today and they handle moisture better than peas but not not this much.

Took a drive about today , it’s a mess. Easily 10 % lost to flooding, plus lots of crops yellowing. If we get an average crop i will be surprised. Add in inflated inputs .

In a couple weeks Niel Townsend will be on his annual crop tour and make his annual declaration that this is the biggest crop he’s ever seen. This will send markets in a downward spiral until next May. Happens every year so I thought I would just make the prediction for him. You’re welcome Neil! Maybe stay home this year Niel, or you’ll be made the fool again.

On a more serious note, Lentils are in trouble. They are just trying to stay alive. They will need 3 or 4 passes of fungicide to make harvest. Fusarium in wheat and sclerotinia in canola will be a big problem this year. Will be a test on all the new varieties, as we have not had perfect disease conditions like this since the 2010-2016 years. Some guys won’t spray fungicide because the varieties are supposed to handle the disease. We’ll see soon enough.

Lots of crops in the flat land with water between the rows, where it’s ever so slightly lower than the rest of the field. How long can they hold their breath?

Some crops, depending on variety, and if not fungicided, could be a big surprise disaster when the combine pulls into the field.
