Maybe under very intensively managed rotational grazing on high inputs might make it economical, at least here where we do get rain.

I have a cattle farming neighbor whose operation consists of an acreage. Another who started out on an acreage and have grown to a substantial operation. You could literally feed the 10 cow herd in your example with a pitchfork in your backyard, for almost no overhead or equipment expense to get a foot in the door.

In my observation, most aspiring cattlemen are better described as aspiring tractor drivers and wishful diesel pickup owners. The cattle are only the justification to have the shiny toys.
This is where you should have stopped

I am a hypocrite for advocating one thing while we have gone to straight grain in a traditional cattle area.

I have cattle and grain and I still yap on social media.

I think it is retarded that farmers in Canada get nothing ,their prices set on US markets , while American farmers are getting adhoc payments.

And we have retard representatives saying nothing.

Photo ops galore in Ottawa the last week on social media.

Conservatives MPs got the research centres issue on committee. They have never got drought issues to the committee.

MPs like Patzer and Tolmie making speeches talking about the west side irrigation project and putting it on the Canada first project list . Billions will be spent while the existing large districts are subsidized millions every year .

Dryland farmers are ignored. Patzer's riding has farmers in multiple year droughts and says SFA.

Where is the latest farmer liberal senator ??? Seems Todd Lewis is quiet on farm issues. After being praised for his efforts as a farm leader ( cough )

      etc etc etc.

Are you insinuating that Ab5 is not a active farmer and just “yaps on social media”? Forage not sure what the reason is for your outlook. Both you and Ab5 from what little I can gather from reading your posts are both intelligent successful people. Not sure why the continued pissing match from both sides except to give us all a bit of entertainment!

[QUOTE=SASKFARMER;n830971]China can now take our beef but if we don't build the Canadian beef herd won't this just lead to increase in Canadians prices.

I think we need major incentives to grow the herd.

          [/QUOTE

I wouldn't be worrying about a shortage of beef cattle. The old rule of showing a farmer a profit will lead to him showing you a surplus will still hold IMHO.

With grain prices, within 3 years farmers respond and prices correct.

It just may be alittle longer with beef, because of the length of production cycle, but either supply or DEMAND will adjust.

Geez, I guess it's not hard to date ourselves on here is it? Thinking I'm of same vintage. Law won't allow long stints anymore let alone a season. (Still some exceptions) All there was then.
Come home for Christmas if you're lucky, then every day till breakup.
Wondering how much farm shortfall could be covered by a winters' wage today?
Maybe not the point. How many would even do it?

Boom Trump takes out the Ayatollah. Oil should go up Monday along with wheat and maybe Canola.

Sad when a war increases our prices.
diesel, gas increase will probably cancel it out.

Don't be too hard on forage. Since I put Chuck on ignore, and lost the entertainment value of those interactions Forage has had some very big shoes to fill. Big bulbous red clown shoes to be specific. And forage is doing a very good job of keeping the maturity level of the discourse up to Chuck's exceptionally low standards.

As for why he is picking on me here. It is of course because I said something about the Ukraine in a completely unrelated thread and forum. So rather than be man enough to defend the indefensible bold predictions and he has made on this in the past, as always, he starts a new unrelated battle.

                    Happens every single time.

Forage, sorry I missed your post over the weekend, we were snowmobiling in the mountains.

One of the many perks of being out of the cattle and the hay business. We actually have time to enjoy life in the winter for the first time. We can get away to the mountains whenever the boys schedules allow. We also just came back from a family holiday. I can spend all winter making new crop land (my favorite activity).

And while waiting in line to unload grain, I have plenty of spare time to yap on social media.

If you are ever passing through West Central Alberta, feel free to look me up and I can give you tour of our imaginary farm. Send me a message through the forum.
