Yup. Few years ago companies got on board pushing beans here (soy).
Typical August no rain. Boom, haven't seen em since. Odd faba field.
Canola belt became so for a reason.
We're trying to change it up somewhat, but will likely always max the canola acres.

IMHO you have to be willing to sacrifice the lentil crop to get a soybean yield.

There was a 1 nice lentil field here last yr.
Most often just grow like hay.
Guy from the Punjab told me their lentils grow near knee high?

Maybe a few of you don’t see too far past your back yard
many of us have tried and are growing a range of crops and not canola balls too the wall . So no not “boom”
we have grown fabas , black beans , lentils , peas , canary seed , hard white spring wheat , winter wheat , oats , feed barley , malt barley . And so have most others.
speacialty crops have a fit for sure but many producers have been burnt with specialty crops processors with bankruptcy , year long delays in delivery and non payment.
Thats a very naive view that farmers should try to grow something else

Just checked Saskatchewan crop insurance 5-year fabo Bean average 36 bushels. Alberta 2024 even lower than that. I didn't try to calculate the entire alberta 5-year average.

                  Not a great sales pitch.

Neighbor was filling in two dugouts with his cat this week. Don't think the cows are coming back. More room to grow canola I guess
