Noteworthy that this only applies to oil and meal, not whole product.
In 2024, as per stats Can, China imported 821 tonnes of oil, out of 3,150,000 tonnes total exports. A drop in the bucket.

2 million tonnes of meal is significant at 35% of the total exports.

But is dwarfed by the whole seed exports at 5,863,794 tonnes to China, which appear to be exempt.

I wonder if this might be more about their plan to do all value added at home. The renewable diesel industry likely flooding their market with cheap meal.

Never has the old adage of the grain markets being 15% protein and 85% politics rung truer. I am so sick of being collateral damage from things "I" have NOT done. Last night someone said to me, "I'm almost to the point of not caring anymore".

The tariff may not be applied to whole canola seed but that's the base from where the tariffed oil and meal come from so guess what.... Sunday over night trading and Monday ICE canola futures are going to get spanked.

China imposes a retaliatory tariff on canola oil, canola meal and peas in response to Canada's tariff on Chinese EV's, steel and aluminum.
How many EV vehicles and how much aluminum or steel are produced in Western Canada and were is most of the canola grown? The Prairies gets gut punched then kicked in the nuts when we're down because of Ottawa's actions. Trump IS NOT a huge distraction in Western Canada, we've known loooong before Trump the elite power of Eastern Canada will sacrifice us in their favor all while having their jackboots on the Western Canadian's neck. Just look what they've done to our energy sector.

Hopefully that means they keep buying canola and process it there. Not sure how much oil they actually buy from us.

          Farma.
At a meeting Thursday. Chatted with a salesman from NS.
Listened to a presentation from a wonk living in Quebec working for Canadian Agri Food Policy Institute.
Those people are in such a flatulence filled bubble, that after 40 years, I find it hard to care anymore. Nothing changes.
Yet in the real world, all things come to an end.

See my post above. China buys 0.02% of our oil exports.

China has had an import tariff on whole canola seed for a long time. It is 9% vs 3% for soy. I think these tariffs are still in effect. This tariff on peas is real bad news as growing pulses is the only way we had to keep the greedy fertilizer industry in check.

Quota does not actually require compensation. Simply remove all the tariffs and let half priced American product come in. As demand drops for the overpriced Canadian product just give lower and lower allocations. People paying $55000 per KG should not be bailed out in any way. They are similar to NFT buyers and should be treated as such.
