      It's said that half is owned by 500 - but much of that is of little agricultural value. Highland estates of 40, 50 or 60,000 acres used for grouse and deer hunting and maybe running 1200 ewes. The Duke of Buccleuch is the biggest landowner at 215,000 acres.

        Makes more sense of it. Lot of waste type ground up in those hills. No wonder highlanders were so ornery. Kinda a Mad Max scenario.

              Updated to 2018 dollars, using Les' original data (which is very close to FCC provincial averages) plus their 2018 #s.
