I don't have either a facebook or twitter account.

Is that not possible already. Copy paste URL addresses and hotlink them, or would it be more of a direct link through a share button.

I don't see it being a huge issue. What are the drawbacks?

Would still be nice to have something as simple as a "like" button.

Facebook is a curse. Every time you want to comment on a newspaper article, you have to first log in to facebook, so everyone can see what you are commenting on. Just garbage!

I would hope that wouldn't be the case here. That would be the fault of the other sites you're trying to contribute to if you have to log into Facebook before you're allowed to make a comment, I would have to agree that it should only be optional or at your descretion whether you want to or not. I think its all about creating website traffic.

As individuals, there has NEVER been a time in history that we have been more visible than now. Kinda scary.

Credit and debit card numbers, cellphones, MAC addresses, .....social insurance numbers pale in comparison.
