Canada's Volunteers to be nominated for PMVA

PRIME MINISTER HARPER TO RECOGNIZE CANADA’S VOLUNTEERS

OTTAWA (July 19, 2011) – Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, is pleased to announce the creation of the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards (PMVA), in order to recognize those who contribute to the success of their communities and their country by making a difference and inspiring hope.

“Volunteers make an enormous impact in all of our lives, often working behind the scenes, yet, all too often, their contributions do not receive the appreciation they deserve”, said Benoit. “The new Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards program will provide these valuable Canadians with much needed recognition for their sacrifices and encourage others to follow in their footsteps”.

Benoit explained that a total of 17 PMVAs will be given - 15 regional awards and two national. Recipients of the awards will be eligible to identify a not-for-profit organization to receive a grant for $5,000 (regional awards) or $10,000 (national awards). The regional awards will be divided into three categories, Community Leader Awards, Business Leader Awards, and Social Innovator Awards. The two national awards are the Emerging Leader Award and the Lifelong Achievement Award.

“Individuals, local businesses and not-for-profit organizations who volunteer their time and efforts will be eligible for nomination,” stated Benoit. “Please feel free to nominate anyone whose devotion and hard work has made a difference in your community.”

The first call for nominations will be due by September 9, 2011. Recipients will be acknowledged in a ceremony in 2012. For more information on how to nominate deserving volunteers, please visit www.pm.gc.ca/awards or call 1-877-825-0434.
