One of the key deferances is that a large postion of the levy goes to plant breeding in the Sask system. These varities are released back to growers without royalities. That is the key differance. If i pay the levy and do not ask for a refund, I do not want you, who does ask for the refund, to have any agronomic advantage over me. Alberta does not have this system. But I am guessing this does not fall into your line of arguement and is therefore left out. Agronomic research is also invested in. This info is available to all farmers. It is difficult to retain that info and only share it with those that pay the levy.

In Saskatchewan, there is a straight 1% deduction off the top.

Haven't ever applied for a refund.

It's the principle I am talking about.

And it's not just canola growers. It's Ag organizations who slap through legislation and farmer be damned. I understand why it's done. I also approve of research.

I just don't support HOW it's done.

The onus should NOT be on the farmer to recoup his earnings.

Maybe you would advocate that all your body organs AND MINE should automatically be harvested unless you notify your hospital otherwise. I say no

It is too easy to collect from farmers this way. It gives everyone but farmers an unfair advantage.

Add a waiver portion, and I'm happy. It does not preclude a farmer from participating either.

I also realize that some seed growers voluntarily give a checkoff. Good for you for being pro-active. That is your choice, though.

BUT, there should not be legislation in place that AUTOMATICALLY extracts money from anyone's paycheck, no matter the reason, environmental, mental health, food aid, etc..

My neighbors went to a meeting in spring 07 and kostal was telling them not to grow flax last year. Kostal got paid for his presentation. My neighbors are still fuming.

Yes. I have a lot of respect for Greg and Brian with regards to knowledge of the markets and ability to take information and turn it into something a farmer can use to make decisions with.

No. They are presenting information as best they see it based on current conditions today. They are only a tiny piece of the puzzle however. People will consider their information along with that of others and their opinion including THE FINANCIAL CONDITION AND RISK TAKING ABILITY OF THEIR BUSINESS and make their own decision. The combination of many decisions (completed transactions) is what makes a price on a daily basis.

Farmers made 100 % of their decision based on a market outlook in likely Feb./Mar. and weren't able to adapt to new conditions? Did anyone follow up with Greg closer to seeding time to see if his recommendations had changed. My experience with Greg and outlooks is that he provides full disclosure on his thinking processes and analysis. I always encourage all farmers to spend understand why as much as what and be prepared to react.

Look, Kostal gets paid to show up at meetings and tell people what he knows or for that matter what he doesn't know. You are right farmers have to be more mindful of the info they receive.

Farmers go to these meetings and expect these guys to give them some perspective. When they are wrong its no sweat off their ass.

Quite frankly, I read things on this site, the paper, watch the markets (I wish I had balls bigger than raisins to play the futures market)and make the decisions based on that and costs.
Sometimes its one abscure article that can make a decision for me. I think weber said a couple months ago 300000 acres at 20 bu were needed for flax demand. Flax pencilled in better than canola. Just the seed costs made it a better option. I knew lentils were a good option but I just hate wrecking the combine. Although at these prices I could have wrecked one. Thing is I know who talked me out growing lentils and I hate mirrors. My decision and I can live with the consequences just like my 800 acres of flax I will probably be combing in the snow.
