Freewheat - Pasteur Wheat

In this area we have poundmaker and 2 feed mills within 15 miles. Viterra feed special was 5.50 last week, our mills have been 5.40 to 5.60 all winter.

All the hard red made a 3 or feed with low protein... and yielded poorly last year in the 30s and 40s while pasteur was 60s and 70s.


Of course if you can grow 1 and 2 red consistently there's no point growing pasteur...

This year we will have 200ac of Pasteur and 460 of Shaw on our farm...

Our barns have hit 6 or close to it many times if you are paying attention. Right now there are a couple 5.70 bids. I would far rather grow 70 plus bushels for 6 dollar feed, than 50 or so bushels of 6.50 or 7 for milling. If it grades. Barns are very forgiving on quality. Elevators not so much. Even if it has bugs, the barns don't care a hoot. They also do not rely on rail.

I probably will grow cps again, knowing how late pasteur can be. Faba bean stubble should yield good.

2 weeks extra for maturity vs Unity doesn’t sound appealing.

Still have small bin of seed here. We use it for grazing if we don’t get the rye planted in the fall. Just too long of season variety to make grain for us out here. Lots of straw too.
