Heres a picture of the Missouri system. Except for a few miles of the Milk River, in Southern Alberta, all the water in Missouri comes from the USA. According to Wiki, I didn't realize its the longest river in the USA.

      Remember Devine intervention and Rafferty-
Alameda? That project met with a lot of
opposition. Now we are benefitting because of
      his persistence.

I do recall that project. The thoughts at the time
(Saskatchewan psychology ) were that, the dam
would take 10 years to fill up if the river did not dry
up before that time. Plenty of negative objection
in my area. I was young and did not care about
politics or the future of the province. I was looking
towards Alberta to go and "make money".

Paraphrasing; but the key concluding words in the official "Rafferty/Alameda Studywere (as I recall)

"The cost/benefit ratio was less than unity; but when the benefits that could not be quantified, were included; the projects was deemed to be extremely worthwhile."

Anyone have that exact quote handy.

its interesting how many ways there are to
consider the length of a river.

I missed you said specifically USA
                dogpatch.

I would think that if you added all the miles of tributaries involved in the Mississippi (Missouri, and Ohio both being a tributaries) it would certain get the water from the biggest drainage basin

The mississippi is an amazing infrastructure that has reduced shipping costs for the grainbelt farmers to put them well ahead of canadian farmers.

It would be nice if we had that type of infrastructure in canada serving the canadian prairies instead of being held hostage by the railways.

Now here is an interesting question.

Do you think it would be cheaper to design a system like the mississippi for canada (it could be done) or enact running rights on the railways to bring done the cost of rail service?

The milk river also flows into the
                      Missouri river.
