Setting aside the fact that the wheat basis has had wide swings over the last two years and we only priced when it was narrow. Also the apparently extravagant risk premium being charged in current and even new crop basis.
My gut tells me we are still paying less now than in the 'good' old days before we kicked over that rotten bale. Wether or not we like that exposure, I'm sure someone on here has those numbers at their fingertips?

Why shouldn't the grain companies take all the profit they can? No law against it. Corporations make money any way they can, that's their purpose.

There is nothing, no law, to stop them from giving you 2$ a bushel. Market freedom and all.
